Dimerix (ASX:DXB) said new human data has provided further independent evidence in support of the company's DMX-200 investigational therapy for focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, a disease characterized by scarring in parts of the kidney, according to a Friday filing with the Australian bourse.
An independent study of 261 patients found that CCR2, a cell surface receptor that plays a key role in the damage and scarring of the kidney, is a biologically relevant therapeutic target in the disease, reinforcing the mechanism-of-action rationale for DMX-200, per the filing.
CCR2 activity, which is an indicator of inflammation, was found to be significantly elevated in kidney samples from patients with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis compared with healthy controls, the company said.
DMX-200 inhibits the CCR2 receptor and is being evaluated by Dimerix in a fully recruited phase 3 study.
The company's shares fell 5% in recent Friday trade.
