Refiners Have Tripled in 2026: Could the Trump-Putin Diesel Deal Break the Trade?

Putin is sending the first Russian diesel tanker to the U.S. on Thursday, part of a deal with Trump to ease diesel prices that have topped $6 a gallon. The Nov. 3 midterm elections are less than two weeks away.

The shipment raises a question for one of the market’s best trades this year: what more Russian diesel means for U.S. refiners.

PBF Energy Inc. (NYSE:PBF) has tripled in 2026. Marathon Petroleum Corp. (NYSE:MPC) is up 190% and Valero Energy Corp. (NYSE:VLO) 165%, against 12% for the S&P 500. Valero reports third-quarter results Thursday before the open, the same day the tanker sets sail.

One Tanker, Two And A Half Hours

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said Wednesday the first cargo will carry 40,000 tons of diesel, Russian state news agency TASS reported. That is about 300,000 barrels.

Valero’s refineries can process roughly 3 million barrels of crude a day. The first tanker matches less than two and a half hours of that throughput.

Trump wrote on Truth Social on Oct. 9 that Russia would ship 4.8 million tons in four stages, or about 36 million barrels, roughly 12 days of Valero’s throughput.

“Diesel prices for Americans and, indeed, the world, will be coming down, in record numbers, and fast!” Trump wrote.

Why Refiners Care About Diesel Prices

Refiners do not profit from oil prices. They profit from the gap between what they pay for crude and what they get for fuel, known as the crack spread.

That gap exploded in 2026. The 3-2-1 crack, which assumes three barrels of crude yield two of gasoline and one of diesel, stands at about $53 a barrel, based on front-month NYMEX futures on TradingView. A year ago it was near $23.

It is down from a 2026 peak near $70 on Oct. 7.

Diesel remains the tightest piece: New York Harbor diesel cracks alone were “well above $100/bbl” on Oct. 13, according to a Bank of America’s research report.

Drivers still pay the price. The AAA national average for diesel stood at $6.32 a gallon on Wednesday, 74% higher than a year ago and just slightly below the $6.53 record set on Sept. 22.

U.S. diesel inventories stand at 105 million barrels, 12% below the five-year average, according to Kpler.

Russia Cannot Fix The Shortage Alone

Bank of America commodity strategist Francisco Blanch expects little from the Russian barrels.

“The recent suspension of U.S. sanctions on Russian diesel may help though only at the margin given the domestic scarcity that Moscow faces,” Blanch said.

“We therefore view any pullback in distillate prices as a buying opportunity,” he added.

Rory Johnston, founder of Commodity Context, sees no surge in Russian supply yet.

“We’ve seen a tiny uptick over the past few weeks, but nothing yet to write home about,” he wrote on X Tuesday.

What Valero Has To Show On Thursday

Analysts expect Valero to earn $21.12 a share in the third quarter, roughly six times the $3.53 a year earlier, according to TradingView data. Revenue is expected at $42.73 billion.

The outlook matters more than the beat, starting with fourth-quarter diesel margins.

Russian barrels can lower prices at the margin. They don’t add refining capacity, which is the constraint behind this year’s rally.
