BankUnited Q3 2026 Earnings: NIM Expansion Offsets Weaker Noninterest Income

TradingKey10-21 18:52

BankUnited (NYSE: BKU) reported Q3 2026 net interest income of $260.7 million, up 4% from $250.1 million a year earlier, while diluted EPS increased to $1.01 from $0.95. Net income was nearly unchanged at $72.2 million as a wider net interest margin and lower credit provision were offset by weaker noninterest income and higher operating expenses. Average noninterest-bearing deposits rose 10% year over year, supporting a lower cost of funding.

Core Financial Results

Results for the quarter ended September 30 showed continued improvement in BankUnited’s core spread income. Net interest margin reached 3.16%, up 16 basis points year over year, while the average cost of deposits declined 39 basis points.

The improvement did not fully carry through to pre-provision earnings. Noninterest income declined and expenses increased, leaving pre-provision net revenue at $105.9 million, down from $109.5 million a year earlier.

Business and Portfolio Performance

Average core loans increased by $706 million, or 4%, from the prior-year quarter, but average total loans were stable because BankUnited continued to run off residential and other non-core loans. Commercial real estate and mortgage warehouse lending provided the main areas of growth, while commercial and industrial lending was slightly lower.

Average Loan BalanceQ3 2026Q3 2025Year-Over-Year Change
Commercial real estate$7.01 billion$6.39 billionUp 10%
Commercial and industrial$8.40 billion$8.49 billionDown 1%
Mortgage warehouse lending$863.8 million$637.7 millionUp 35%
Residential$6.60 billion$7.22 billionDown 9%
Total core loans$16.86 billion$16.15 billionUp 4%

The loan mix reflects BankUnited’s balance-sheet repositioning strategy. Growth in commercial real estate and mortgage warehouse lending more than offset much of the planned reduction in residential balances, though total average loans remained broadly unchanged.

On the funding side, average total deposits excluding brokered deposits rose by $1.0 billion year over year. Average noninterest-bearing demand deposits increased by $824 million to approximately $9.03 billion and represented 32.2% of total deposits, compared with 30.1% a year earlier. Ending noninterest-bearing deposits declined 8% sequentially, which management attributed primarily to seasonal normalization following elevated second-quarter inflows.

Profitability, Credit, and the Balance Sheet

Lower Deposit Costs Supported Margin Expansion

The average cost of deposits fell six basis points sequentially to 1.99% and improved by 39 basis points year over year. BankUnited also benefited from favorable commercial loan repricing and a better loan mix, with tax-equivalent commercial loan yields increasing five basis points from the second quarter.

These factors helped net interest income rise 2% sequentially and 4% year over year. The benefit was partly limited by lower asset yields, as variable-rate loans and securities repriced downward faster than some of the funding-cost benefits flowed through.

Credit Improved Year Over Year but NPLs Rose Sequentially

Criticized and classified loans declined by $176 million, or 14%, year over year to approximately $1.05 billion. The annualized net charge-off ratio was 0.11%, unchanged from the second quarter and down from 0.25% a year earlier.

Nonperforming loans presented a more mixed picture. They declined by $116 million, or 30%, from the prior-year quarter but increased by $40 million, or 18%, sequentially. The nonperforming asset ratio rose to 0.77% from 0.66% in Q2, although it remained below 1.10% in Q3 2025. The allowance for credit losses increased to $221.5 million, equal to 0.93% of total loans.

Securities Losses Reduced Equity and Capital Ratios

BankUnited ended the quarter with $34.6 billion in total assets, $23.8 billion in loans, and $28.3 billion in deposits. Accumulated other comprehensive loss increased by $137.8 million sequentially due to higher unrealized losses on available-for-sale securities.

The CET1 ratio declined 20 basis points from Q2 to 12.1%, while the tangible common equity ratio fell 45 basis points to 8.0%. Tangible book value per share decreased from $40.48 to $39.10. BankUnited also repurchased approximately 2.1 million shares for $97.0 million during the quarter.

Securities Repositioning Lifted Portfolio Yield but Reduced Current Income

BankUnited sold approximately $1.0 billion of lower-yielding securities and reinvested the proceeds in higher-yielding investments. The transaction supported the tax-equivalent yield on the investment portfolio and contributed to the sequential improvement in net interest margin, but it also produced a $2.3 million net securities loss in the current quarter, compared with a $0.6 million gain a year earlier.

That trade-off helps explain why spread income improved while total noninterest income fell. Other contributors to the decline included lower bank-owned life insurance income and weaker lease financing income. BOLI income fell by $1.4 million year over year, while lease financing income declined by $2.4 million, partly because the quarter included a $1.1 million loss on equipment disposition.

Excluding the securities sales, adjusted net income increased to $73.9 million from $71.4 million, and adjusted diluted EPS rose to $1.03 from $0.94.

Management Commentary

Chairman, President and CEO Rajinder Singh emphasized continued deposit momentum and said the 3.16% net interest margin was ahead of the company’s guidance. Management attributed the margin improvement to lower deposit pricing, growth in noninterest-bearing deposits, commercial loan repricing, and the securities portfolio repositioning. Singh also said the company remained focused on increasing profitability and creating long-term shareholder value.

Risks Investors Should Monitor

  • Noninterest income volatility: Securities transactions, BOLI returns, equipment dispositions, and capital-markets activity all reduced fee and other income during the quarter. Continued variability could offset improvements in net interest income.
  • Deposit competition and operating costs: Noninterest expense rose about 5% year over year, primarily because of higher employee compensation and deposit-related costs. Competition for deposits could affect both expenses and funding costs.
  • Sequential increase in problem assets: Nonperforming loans increased 18% from Q2 and the nonperforming asset ratio rose to 0.77%, despite clear year-over-year improvement in credit metrics.
  • Capital sensitivity to securities valuations: Higher unrealized securities losses reduced AOCI, tangible common equity, and tangible book value during Q3. Additional valuation changes could continue to affect reported equity and capital ratios.

Summary

BankUnited’s Q3 2026 results showed better core spread profitability, supported by lower deposit costs, a larger average noninterest-bearing deposit base, and securities portfolio repositioning. Those gains were partly offset by lower noninterest income and higher expenses, leaving net income nearly flat even as EPS increased. The main points to monitor are whether margin improvement persists, whether noninterest income stabilizes, and whether the sequential rise in nonperforming loans remains contained.
