Japan's core consumer price index (CPI), which excludes volatile fresh food prices, rose 2.1% year over year in September, according to data from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications on Friday.

The reading was in line with the consensus forecast tracked by Investing.com, and was up from the 1.7% expansion recorded in the previous month.

Meanwhile, headline inflation quickened to 2.1% from 1.9% the previous month, to mark the highest print in 2026.

On a month-over-month basis, Japan's core CPI inched up 0.2%, reversing the 0.1% decline in August, while monthly headline CPI was flat after a 0.1% increase the previous month.
