Canadian space-technology company MDA Space is teaming with a Ukrainian counter-drone manufacturer on the joint production and support of unmanned aerial systems.-
MDA's defense-focused subsidiary 49North signed a memorandum of understanding with Unwave in an effort to help Ukraine address its defense needs during the ongoing war with Russia and to strengthen industrial ties between Canada and Ukraine.
The deal comes after Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy last month agreed on a series of initiatives to bolster Canada's sovereign drone capabilities and expand co-production with Ukraine. The pact aims to deliver a continuous supply of drones for the Canadian Armed Forces and the Canadian Coast Guard, while also helping beef up Ukraine's military supplies.
The companies plan to leverage Unwave's counter-drone expertise and 49North's expertise in advanced sensing and secure digital mission systems to advance joint production and support systems that address Ukraine's evolving needs, 49North President Joe Armstrong said.
