Corning Q3 2026 Earnings: Optical Growth Lifts Sales and Margins

TradingKey10-27

Corning (NYSE: GLW) reported Q3 2026 GAAP sales of $4.86 billion, up 18% year over year, and diluted EPS of $0.78, up 56% from $0.50. On a non-GAAP core basis, sales rose 19% to $5.08 billion and EPS increased 36% to $0.91, led by Optical Communications and accompanied by wider core margins and $661 million of adjusted free cash flow.

Core Financial Results

GAAP net income attributable to Corning increased 58% to $680 million. Core earnings also grew faster than core sales: core net income and EPS rose 36%, while core gross margin expanded 150 basis points and core operating margin widened 310 basis points.

GAAP gross margin was 37.3% and GAAP operating margin was 18.8%. Corning said the difference between GAAP and core EPS primarily reflected adjustments for hedged exposures and discrete tax items.

Business and Segment Performance

Optical Communications generated $727 million of additional sales from a year earlier, accounting for roughly 90% of the $809 million increase in total core sales. The segment also posted substantially faster income growth than revenue growth.

SegmentQ3 2026 SalesSales ChangeQ3 2026 Net Income (Loss)Income Change
Optical Communications$2.379B+44%$532M+80%
Glass Innovations$1.506B-3%$328M-10%

Solar$436M+37%$(7)MFrom $30M profit
Life Sciences and Emerging Growth Businesses$290M+1%$(28)MLoss widened 87%

Optical Communications benefited from an 84% increase in Enterprise Networks sales and more than 100% growth in generative AI product sales. Management attributed the performance to faster adoption of Corning’s products, with generative AI sales growing faster than GPU units.

Glass Innovations sales and net income declined despite management’s view that its increased-content strategy helped it outperform TV, notebook and smartphone end markets affected by memory pricing. Automotive revenue grew modestly, but segment income was nearly unchanged.

Solar sales increased 37%, but the segment recorded a $7 million loss compared with a $30 million profit a year earlier. Production continued to ramp more slowly than anticipated, although Corning said improving productivity and U.S. trade action under Section 232 should support output, pricing and demand for domestically produced solar products.

Corning revised its segment structure in the first quarter of 2026. Prior-period figures were recast to conform to the new presentation, which combined the former Display and Specialty Materials operations into Glass Innovations and created a separate Solar segment.

Profitability and Cash Flow

Corning generated $1.06 billion of GAAP operating cash flow and $661 million of adjusted free cash flow during the quarter while investing more than $500 million in capital expenditures. For the first nine months of 2026—a separate year-to-date period—adjusted free cash flow reached $2.27 billion.

The margin expansion indicates that earnings converted at a faster rate than revenue. Core EPS growth of 36% was nearly double the 19% increase in core sales, while the 310-basis-point improvement in core operating margin exceeded the 150-basis-point expansion in core gross margin.

Optical’s Rising Weight Strengthened Operating Leverage

Optical Communications increased from approximately 39% of core sales in Q3 2025 to about 47% in Q3 2026. Its segment net income rose 80%, substantially faster than its 44% sales growth, indicating stronger operating leverage within Corning’s largest growth business.

Corning did not quantify Optical Communications’ exact contribution to consolidated margin expansion. However, the segment’s increased sales weight and faster income growth coincided with wider company-level core gross and operating margins, making the shift in business mix an important feature of the quarter.

Q4 2026 Guidance

Management expects core sales and EPS to maintain approximately the same year-over-year growth rates reported in Q3. The outlook again calls for EPS to grow faster than revenue.

MetricQ4 2026 OutlookExpected Year-Over-Year Change
Core sales$5.2B-$5.3BApproximately +19%
Core EPS$0.96-$1.00Approximately +36%

Corning did not provide corresponding GAAP guidance because management does not forecast currency movements and certain other reconciling items outside its control.

Management’s View

Management presented the quarter as early evidence of acceleration under its Springboard plan, which targets an increase in annualized sales run rate from $20 billion to $40 billion by the end of 2030. The company also aims to grow earnings faster than sales while improving return on invested capital and free cash flow.

Corning secured four long-term, multibillion-dollar customer agreements during Q3, including agreements with Verizon and AT&T. Management said these arrangements support planned capacity expansion by sharing some of its costs and risks with customers.

Risks Investors Need to Watch

  • Dependence on Optical Communications: Optical generated most of the quarter’s incremental core sales. A slowdown in generative AI infrastructure, enterprise network spending or orders from major customers could have an outsized effect on growth and margins.
  • Solar execution and profitability: Solar revenue rose 37%, but the production ramp was slower than anticipated and the segment moved from profit to loss. Productivity, capacity execution and the trade-policy environment will affect the path to profitability.
  • Pressure in device-related markets: Glass Innovations reported lower sales and income while TV, notebook and smartphone markets faced pressure associated with memory pricing.
  • Capital intensity: Corning invested more than $500 million in quarterly capital expenditures to address demand. Returns and future cash flow depend on matching that additional capacity with customer demand.
  • Losses in smaller operations: The loss in Life Sciences and Emerging Growth Businesses widened to $28 million from $15 million despite nearly flat sales.

Conclusion

Corning’s Q3 2026 growth was concentrated in Optical Communications, where AI and enterprise networking demand helped lift both revenue and segment profitability. That favorable mix coincided with wider core margins and solid cash generation, while slower Solar execution, declining Glass Innovations income and continued losses in smaller businesses remain the main areas to monitor alongside delivery of the Q4 outlook.
