Why the Fed is Expected to Hold Interest Rates Steady Today

Dow Jones17:48

Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh and the Federal Open Market Committee are in a bit of a bind on interest rates. For now, anyway.

Here is what's complicating the Fed's interest-rate decision:

-- September's inflation readings: Tariffs, energy costs and the AI boom kept inflation higher than ideal.

-- September's jobs report: Only 29,000 jobs were added.

-- Warsh comments: In public remarks on Oct.16, he didn't signal a cut or increase was looming.

-- The upcoming midterms: Changing interest rates now would be a surprise, shaking things up just before the election. That said, Fed officials insist politics plays no role in their decisions.
