Ad Disclosure\n\nBitcoin briefly fell below $80,000, triggering approximately $404.15 million in cryptocurrency long liquidations over four hours. The move coincided with heavy withdrawals from US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs), adding to signs of caution among leveraged traders and some institutional investors.\nTL;DR\n\n$404.15 million in longs liquidated: Long positions accounted for most of the $436.44 million in crypto liquidations over four hours.\nBitcoin briefly fell below $80,000: BTC reached approximately $79,280 before recovering above the threshold.\nETF outflows added context: US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded a combined $773 million in outflows on Thursday and Friday.\n\nBitcoin’s Drop Triggers Forced Selling\nAccording to CoinGlass data cited in reporting by The Block, cryptocurrency liquidations reached $436.44 million over the four-hour period, with $404.15 million coming from long positions.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLong traders generally profit when prices rise. When they borrow funds or use derivatives leverage, a relatively small adverse move can reduce their margin below an exchange’s required level, forcing the position to close.\nBitcoin briefly reached approximately $79,280 before recovering above $80,000. The forced closures were concentrated in two bursts, with more than $208 million in long positions liquidated during one 15-minute period and another $131 million in a later burst.\nThe data illustrates how leverage can amplify short-term volatility. Liquidations do not necessarily indicate that every trader has changed their long-term outlook, but they can accelerate selling when many positions are vulnerable at similar price levels.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEther and Other Markets Also Face Liquidations\nEther positions accounted for approximately $136.72 million in liquidations over the same four-hour window, compared with $158.45 million for Bitcoin, according to the reported figures.\nThe scale of Ether’s losses was notable relative to its smaller market capitalization. Long positions represented more than 90% of liquidations for both assets, suggesting that bullish leveraged positioning was particularly exposed during the move.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBinance recorded approximately $226 million in liquidated positions, while decentralized perpetual futures platform Hyperliquid recorded around $70.47 million.\nReaders can follow related developments through Bitcoinist’s Bitcoin coverage and its cryptocurrency market reporting.\nBitcoin ETF Outflows Add to Cautious Sentiment\nUS spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded approximately $635.49 million in net outflows on Thursday and another $137.94 million on Friday, bringing the two-day total to about $773 million.\nThe withdrawals followed three consecutive days of net inflows earlier in the week. Despite the late-week reversal, the funds retained approximately $304.73 million in net inflows across the full week.\nETF flows provide one measure of demand for regulated Bitcoin exposure, but they do not independently explain short-term price movements. The reported outflows coincided with the liquidation event; the figures alone do not prove that ETF withdrawals caused it.\nArthur Hayes Reduces Directional Exposure\nBitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes said he had closed the directional trading book at his family office, Maelstrom, and taken profits on several tokens, including Ethereum, Ethena and Uniswap. He cited uncertainty surrounding macroeconomic and geopolitical conditions and said he would wait for a clearer signal.\nHis decision offers an example of a market participant reducing directional exposure, but it does not establish that a broader downturn is inevitable.\nFor methodology and context, CoinGlass’ liquidation data documentation explains how aggregated cryptocurrency liquidations are tracked. The next indicators to watch include Bitcoin’s price stability, derivatives open interest and subsequent ETF flows.\n\n\nEditorial Process for bitcoinist is centered on delivering thoroughly researched, accurate, and unbiased content.
