Russian President Vladimir Putin called Elon Musk "truly a genius" for deploying thousands of satellites into orbit, multiple outlets reported Wednesday, citing Putin's remarks at a Russia-Africa summit in Moscow.

Putin made the comments while touring an exhibition on the sidelines of the summit, as Moscow seeks to develop its own satellite internet network. Musk has more than 5,000 units in orbit, Putin said, while Russia is "taking our first steps," according to the reports.

Putin said Russia is in close contact with "our American partners, including Mr. Musk," because it is crucial that operators in orbit not interfere with one another, the reports said.
