IRS Highlights Tax Cuts on Election Eve

Dow Jones10-31

In the run-up to Election Day, the Internal Revenue Service is highlighting the tax cuts that Republicans enacted last year. An email sent to some taxpayers emphasized the "real, meaningful tax relief" and the IRS touted statistics about Americans' usage of tax breaks for tipped workers and overtime pay. The agency refers to the legislation as the "Working Families Tax Cuts," the GOP branding for the law formally known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. Republicans have been campaigning on the law's benefits as they try to hold the House and Senate.

In the past, IRS leaders have tried to focus more on tax administration than policy, though they did support administration priorities. In October 2022, IRS news releases detailed the ability of grandparents to claim the child tax credit that Democrats had expanded in a 2021 law and publicized letters that it had sent to taxpayers urging them to file for unclaimed tax breaks from that same law.

The 2025 law was "landmark legislation that ushered in a new era of tax relief and prevented the largest tax increase in American history from taking effect," wrote Frank Bisignano, the agency's CEO, in Thursday's message. "Hardworking Americans like you are keeping more of what they earn because of President Trump's historic tax cuts."
