LLY Stock Hits Record as CEO Says Middle-Income Consumers Are Driving Pharma’s ‘Largest New Category Expansion’

Benzinga Earnings10-30

Eli Lilly and Co. (NYSE:LLY) shares closed at a record Thursday after CEO David Ricks said demand for weight-loss medicines is extending beyond very-high-net-worth consumers, with middle-income households increasingly interested in losing weight at scale.

Middle-Income Demand Surprises Lilly

During Lilly’s third-quarter earnings call, Ricks said one uncertainty entering 2026 was "the depth of the consumer purchasing internationally" and whether demand in out-of-pocket markets would extend beyond "very high net worth individuals."

Ricks said Lilly was assessing whether "more middle-income households would be interested in improving their health and losing weight at scale." He said that factor, along with uptake of the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program, "turned out to be positive for us," with both factors contributing to roughly a $10 billion improvement from Lilly’s initial guidance.

Ricks said Lilly is operating amid "the largest new category expansion in the history of the pharmaceutical industry," adding that Lilly is leading the expansion. He said the size and novelty of the market have created variables that are difficult for the company to forecast.

Lilly Says Market Penetration Remains Low

Chief Financial Officer Lukas Montarce separately said Lilly is "still scratching the surface" of the incretin market despite generating about $16 billion from the business during the quarter.

Montarce said Lilly currently reaches about one in 10 patients in the U.S. and roughly two in 100 patients outside the U.S., calling the current penetration a "really low base."

"The runway of opportunity of growth is still for many years to come from my perspective," Montarce said.

Lilly reported third-quarter revenue of $24.4 billion, up 39% year over year, while Mounjaro and Zepbound together generated more than $16 billion, according to the earnings material.
