Samsung Electronics' shares fell despite posting the fourth straight quarter of record earnings as investors were disappointed with its delayed shareholder return plan.
Shares of the South Korean memory giant fell 5.4% on Thursday. That came despite reporting a quarterly operating profit topping 100 trillion won, equivalent to $74.52 billion, making it the first major global technology company to cross that threshold.
Samsung's shareholder returns offered no upside surprise and have prompted disappointment-driven selling, said Shinhan Securities analyst Kang Jin-hyuk.
Samsung said it will announce the shareholder return plan in January, in contrast to its peer SK Hynix, which plans to return $75 billion to shareholders after a record profit one day earlier.
Investors are increasingly unimpressed by AI-related companies' blockbuster earnings and demand concrete proof of monetization.
"This highlights the real challenge of navigating an equity market with elevated expectations," Counterpoint Research's MS Hwang said.
