Aisin (TYO:7259) and Tohoku University developed a 16-nanometer AI chip that can process data without external memory, according to a Monday news release.
The chip uses built-in magnetic memory, which retains data even when powered off, to store AI models and operating system information. This eliminates the need for external memory components such as DRAM and solid-state drives, the release said.
In tests, the chip reduced operating system startup time to 65.7 milliseconds, about 39 times faster than conventional systems. AI processing was also reduced by about 90%, while energy consumption fell by 98%, according to the release.
The partners plan to further develop the technology for use in automobiles, robots and industrial equipment.
