Ericsson (ERIC) said Monday it introduced a new system that uses existing mobile networks to detect and track low-flying drones and other moving objects, including those not connected to the network.
The company said the system uses 5G radio equipment, artificial intelligence and signal processing to identify objects by analyzing reflected radio signals.
It can provide tracking data to defense, public safety and critical infrastructure operators, complementing existing radar and detection systems, the company added.
Ericsson said the trials with AT&T in Texas, Finland's Erillisverkot and Poland's Play demonstrated the technology's ability to detect and track multiple drones using mobile network infrastructure.
The company noted that actual performance depends on factors including target characteristics, terrain, sensing geometry and system configuration.
The company said it plans to begin small-scale commercial trials with selected customers in 2027, followed by wider deployments in 2028.
It also plans to add integrated communications capabilities as the technology develops toward 6G, the company added.
