Rio Tinto Group (ASX:RIO) and the Rhodes Ridge joint venture are investing AU$28 million in partnership with Curtin University to fund a "waterless barrier" to stop cane toads from reaching Western Australia's Pilbara region, the mining firm said in a statement on Tuesday.
The investment will support infrastructure upgrades needed for a new Toad Containment Zone between the Indian Ocean and the Great Sandy Desert, with early works now in progress for the start of the project in 2027, the statement said.
Rio Tinto holds a 50% stake in the Rhodes Ridge joint venture, per the statement.
