Much of the west side of the National Mall was ringed with fencing on Monday morning ahead of President Trump's remarks at the Lincoln Memorial.
Authorities erected fencing lined with black fabric that blocks the view of the reflecting pool. The fencing stretches from the World War II Memorial to the Lincoln Memorial, cutting off sidewalks and forcing runners, cyclists and tourists to find alternative routes through the typically busy section of the National Mall.
The reflecting pool had been closed off for much of the last few months for renovations. But the fencing that ringed it had mostly come down, and last week tourists and locals were able to run, walk and bike alongside it after a summer in which large swaths of the mall were shuttered for construction and events related to the country's 250th anniversary celebrations. For now, the fencing is back.
