The US is urging Europe to resume purchases of Russian natural gas as part of negotiations to end the targeting of eastern European energy infrastructure in the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday, citing American, European and Ukrainian officials.
The gas purchases, through a natural gas pipeline currently running through Ukraine, would involve a US intermediary to circumvent European sanctions, the report said.
All purchases of Russian gas must end by 2027 under European legislation, the report said.
Representatives of the US, EU, Russia, and Ukraine did not immediately reply to MT Newswires' request for comment.
