We are less than 2 months away from the end of 2023 and as of November 15, the YTD2023 performance of the $Straits Times Index(STI.SI)$ down 3.67%. The index's performance was inferior to the $S&P/ASX 200(XJO.AU)$’s down of 0.95% over the same period, also inferior to the $S&P 500(.SPX)$ with a return of 17.9%, and that of $NASDAQ(.IXIC)$ with +34%.
The return on the $Straits Times Index(STI.SI)$ in 2022 is just over 4%.

1. Why the 8% figure? Let’s look at some numbers first:
As of November 16, 138 of the 746 SGX stocks have returned more than 8% YTD this year. Specifically, there are only 7 SGX Star companies with a YTD 2023 of more than 8%: $SEMBCORP INDUSTRIES LTD(U96.SI)$, $ISEC(40T.SI)$, $Virtus AllianzGI Diversified Income & Convertible Fund(ACV)$ , $SINGAPORE AIRLINES LTD(C6L.SI)$, $OVERSEA-CHINESE BANKING CORP(O39.SI)$, $YZJ Shipbldg SGD(BS6.SI)$, $SINGAPORE EXCHANGE LIMITED(S68.SI)$.
Among the SGX ETFs there are only 3 with a YTD 2023 of more than 8%: $SPDR S&P500 US$(S27.SI)$, $PRINCIPAL ASEAN40 US$(M62.SI)$, $Global Systems Dynamics Inc.(GSD)$, $GLD US$(O87.SI)$.
As for the SGX REITs, we see 7 of them with a YTD 2023 of more than 8%: $Frasers HTrust(ACV.SI)$, $DigiCore Reit USD(DCRU.SI)$, $Keppel DC Reit(AJBU.SI)$, $AIMS APAC Reit(O5RU.SI)$, $Frasers Cpt Tr(J69U.SI)$, $Far East HTrust(Q5T.SI)$, $Mapletree Ind Tr(ME8U.SI)$.
It turns out that overall stock returns in the Singapore market may not be as high as those of US stocks.

I had bought net link trust ar 0.99 last year before the reits crashed took a total of 13 cents dividend now net link trading at 84 cents so i lost almost 2% if not accounting for those $5 vouchers i used with those ski games when sgx charging 2 cents [Happy]
