How nice if I could really hop into the Wayback / WABAC machine (like the one from the "Peabody's Improbable History' cartoon)! Before getting side-tracked into a wild fictional narrative, let's come back to the topic at hand - what investment decisions would I have changed if I could go back to 1 Jan 2023...?
Using Yahoo Finance, I called up an overlay of STI, KLSE, HSI and DJI as these are where I am (or am planning to be) investing mainly at. First observation, for Q1, HSI seemed to break away from the pack with major upside of ~15% with respect to 1 Jan 2023, but come Feb'23, all 4 markets slid downwards until mid Mar'23. From there, it was mostly flat until beginning of Sept'23, and from there HSI started to dip further, sinking below 15% as of today. STI, KLSE and DJI continued to be flat, however, DJI experienced a surge from the end of Oct'23 and looks like this bullish trend will likely continue all the way through till the end of 2023 - with ~2 weeks to go till 2024, perhaps +13% is attainable?
Frankly speaking, the DJI has been on a roller-coaster ride, having 4 peaks this year (Averaging 1 peak per quarter) but each time coming back down to below 0% (not quite reaching -5% at the lowest in mid Nov though). Overall a gradual upwards trend of modest ~10% through this year. So, wish number 2 is to at least put one foot into the US market by the end of Mar'23.
Thus, I wish I would have read the signs of reversal by the end of Q1 2023 and start to pick up some good value stocks from STI, DJI or HSI, which appear to be promising compared to KLSE. From this, you can guess, in actuality today, I'm more exposed to KLSE instead of US, which is... [sigh]... can only hope that 2024 will be better for Malaysia. At least I didn't go all out into HSI instead though.... (sorry, no offense meant to the brothers and sisters from HK).
As we count down the last days of 2023, wish everyone a happy year end holiday, Merry Christmas (for those who are celebrating) and Happy New Year in advance. May 2024 bring much happiness and more profits to all! đ đ đ đ đ đ
