$NIO Inc.(NIO)$ 40 million plus battery swaps would seem to indicate that it is not so stupid. The versatility in options is logically attractive and baas is a nice cash flow alternative that others would like to have. Just consider the schemes many manufacturers have been trying to use to get regular cash flows without additional cost. BMW - with their heated seats as one example. In those cases, the customer has to pay for the hardware up front without having access to use unless they pay a subscription fee. With NIO, customers can buy the car without the battery and only pay for the option of battery that they need. And a 3-5 minute change time vs 20-40 minutes to charge in ideal conditions is a no brainer.

What is your definition of "real autonomous self-driving tech"?

NIO is a gamble, I think that is clear but I can see the logic in what they are trying to accomplish. If it works out, nice returns can be realized.
