Australian government research and development expenditure soared to $4.3 billion in 2022-23, marking a 20% increase in two years, with the government leading the charge in research investment, outpacing both the university and private sectors.
The surge is attributed to post-pandemic recovery efforts, boosted funding in defense and emissions reduction research, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
Environmental research and development saw an uptick, with a 2.7% increase in socio-economic objectives, driven by endeavours to meet emissions reduction targets.
Health and defence sectors remained the primary focus areas, constituting 35.9% of total government research and development spending.
Commonwealth and State/Territory governments saw a parallel 20-21% growth, albeit with differing research and development priorities, particularly in defence and health.
Collaboration with non-government entities, including industry contributions, went up, comprising 21.7% of total funding, the highest in three decades. However, government research and development expenditure as a percentage of GDP has remained static at 0.17% since 2018-19.
