It was an indirect investment. FFIE owed PLTR money and couldn't pay cash so they offered stock as payment.
Mutually beneficial really, on the one hand FFIE gets a big name company to look like an investor, and on the other hand PLTR benefits from the stock surging from people thinking they've directly invested.
Both parties win. Probably a set course on how PLTR can sell the shares over time in chunks as to not melt the share price.
