$Tesla Motors(TSLA)$ Generally, the problem with shorting is that it doesn't typically take into consideration the black swan (for them) event of the stock having a massive run up that holds for years.
If one is leveraged on the short and in over their head, one really bad short can indeed destroy one financially. Even though I'm a Tesla bull. I still limit Tesla to about 5% of my portfolio [now 6%], because I don't want that much concentrated in a volatile stock.
Fortunes can come and go on either side of the trade so if one thinks "It takes a really smart person to successfully short." and somehow gets that twisted into "I shorted, so I must be really smart.", the market often has a penchant for teaching humility.
