OpenAI’s DevDay and the AMD Partnership: Reshaping the AI Landscape

This Monday, OpenAI completely dominated the U.S. capital markets with its highly anticipated 2025 Developer Day (DevDay). Interestingly, Sam Altman didn’t focus on showcasing new model iterations this time. Instead, he revealed a much broader and more strategic roadmap — one that positions ChatGPT as the core of a new “AI operating system” and introduces a landmark partnership with AMD. Together, these moves signal that OpenAI’s full-stack AI ecosystem is quickly taking shape, and the AI landscape is starting to shift.

Everything OpenAI announced at DevDay 2025: Agent Kit, Apps SDK, ChatGPT, and more | ZDNET

From ChatGPT to an “AI Operating System”

This year’s Dev Day wasn’t about model upgrades — it was about a leap from product to platform. The main updates included:

  • Apps SDK – Developers can now embed third-party apps directly inside ChatGPT’s interface. This makes ChatGPT feel like an “OS for conversations,” where users can use multiple apps through chat without switching windows. It’s arguably the most strategically significant feature revealed at Dev Day.

  • AgentKit Toolkit – A new toolkit that lets developers build and deploy full AI Agents — handling task breakdowns, control, and execution — effectively laying the groundwork for a true “agentic” ecosystem.

  • Codex Model – Further enhancements for AI-assisted coding and software generation.

Together, these features mark ChatGPT’s transformation from a standalone app into a multi-app platform. OpenAI showcased integrations with popular services like Spotify $Spotify Technology S.A.(SPOT)$ , Canva, Booking.com $Booking Holdings(BKNG)$ , Coursera, Expedia, Figma $Figma(FIG)$ , Zillow, and even demonstrated ChatGPT creating charts in Figma and posters in Canva — all within the chat. This not only shows how ChatGPT and traditional software can coexist, but also dispels fears that it will completely replace them. Future integrations will extend to DoorDash, Uber $Uber(UBER)$ , OpenTable, and Target, among others — which sent the stocks of these potential partners higher after the event. Altman also emphasized that OpenAI’s next focus will be the enterprise market, expanding adoption through APIs, SDKs, and agents to accelerate real-world AI deployment.

Partnering with AMD for Compute Power

Almost simultaneously with Dev Day, OpenAI and AMD $Advanced Micro Devices(AMD)$ announced what media called “one of the most symbolic partnerships in AI history.” Under the new strategic agreement, OpenAI will deploy up to 6 GW worth of AMD GPU compute capacity over the next few years — spanning multiple generations of AMD’s Instinct products. The first phase will begin in late 2026 with 1 GW of Instinct MI450 GPUs.

To further align interests, AMD is granting OpenAI warrants to purchase up to 160 million AMD common shares — roughly 10% of AMD’s total outstanding shares — which will vest progressively as the 6 GW rollout proceeds.

This collaboration isn’t entirely out of the blue. AMD’s public roadmap already positioned OpenAI as a core partner in its “Open AI Ecosystem,” tied to the MI350 / MI400 series, ROCm software stack, and rack-scale AI systems. AMD CEO Lisa Su had previously hinted that OpenAI would likely be a launch-phase customer for their next-gen products. Following the announcement, AMD’s stock soared more than 35% intraday, closing up about 23%.

OpenAI targets 10% AMD stake via multibillion-dollar chip deal

This partnership strengthens the case for decentralizing AI compute supply, potentially loosening Nvidia’s near-total monopoly on AI chips. For OpenAI, it provides supply chain diversification and cost stability — both crucial given the unprecedented compute demands of large-scale AI training.

That said, the deal isn’t without risks. AMD and TSMC will face enormous pressure to deliver on schedule, and any production delay could affect rollout plans. Moreover, OpenAI’s ongoing spree of massive compute orders — from Oracle (tens of billions), Broadcom (around $10 billion), and now AMD (tens of billions more) — is raising questions about its financing capacity. Critics warn that if OpenAI fails to secure enough capital to fulfill these commitments, some of these ambitious partnerships could stall.

Invesight Viewpoint

Both the Dev Day announcements and the AMD partnership highlight OpenAI’s ambition to build its own AI compute alliance, reshaping the global AI ecosystem. It’s a strategy that could create a “win-win-win” dynamic:

  • For AMD: A rare chance to break Nvidia’s dominance and grab a much larger slice of the AI compute market as customers diversify their supply chains.

  • For traditional software companies: With OpenAI focusing on integration rather than replacement, the fear of “ChatGPT killing apps” is fading. Investors can now re-evaluate these companies based on their innovation and performance, not existential risk.

  • For OpenAI: Building this alliance — spanning hardware, software, and enterprise applications — lays the groundwork for massive scalability and future monetization. Given the capital intensity, many now believe an OpenAI IPO is only a matter of time.

In short, OpenAI’s latest moves are not just about better models — they’re about redrawing the entire AI map.
