Last post, we talked about growing a small account safely. But here is an uncomfortable truth: if you aren't journaling your trades, you aren't trading—you're just gambling.
Most beginner traders fail not because they lack a good strategy, but because they repeat the exact same expensive mistakes 50 times without noticing. A trading journal is your mirror. It turns random buy/sell buttons into actual data you can use to get better.
You don't need fancy $50/month software. Here is a free, simple 7-column template you can set up in 5 minutes using Google Sheets, Excel, or Notion.
The 7-Column Trading Journal Template
Copy these headers directly into your spreadsheet or database:
Breakdown of the Columns (And Why They Matter)
1. Date & Asset/Direction
-
Keep track of the day of the week and whether you went Long (buying expecting price to go up) or Short (selling expecting price to go down).
-
Why it matters: You might discover you have a 70% win rate on Tuesdays, but lose money every single Friday afternoon.
2. Entry & Exit Prices
-
Record the exact prices where you entered and exited the trade.
3. Stop-Loss & Target Prices
-
Record where you planned to get out if wrong (Stop-Loss) and where you planned to take profits (Target).
-
Why it matters: Comparing where you planned to exit vs. where you actually exited exposes whether you are cutting profits early or letting losses run.
4. Risk vs. Reward ($ Amount)
-
How much cash were you risking if the stop hit vs. how much you stood to make if target hit. (e.g., Risking $10 to make $30).
5. Planned R:R (Risk-to-Reward Ratio)
-
Divide your target gain by your risk. Aim for at least 1:2.
If you risk $10 to make $20 (1:2 R:R), you can be wrong 60% of the time and still make a net profit over time!
6. Strategy & Emotional Notes (The Most Important Column!)
-
Write 1–2 sentences covering:
Which setup was this? (e.g., Support Bounce, Breakout, Trend Following).
How did you feel? (e.g., "Felt calm," "FOMO entered late," "Panicked and closed early").
How to Build This in 5 Minutes
-
For Google Sheets / Excel: Open a blank sheet, paste the 7 table headers across row 1, highlight the top row in bold, and freeze row 1.
-
For Notion: Create a new page, choose Inline Table / Database, rename the property columns to match the list above, and use Select tags for "Direction" (Long/Short) and "Setup Type."
The 10-Minute Sunday Routine
A journal is useless if you never look at it. Every Sunday, take 10 minutes to ask yourself 3 questions:
-
What was my win rate this week?
-
Did I break any rules? (e.g., moving stops, over-leveraging).
-
Which setup made me the most money?
$NVIDIA(NVDA)$ $Tesla Motors(TSLA)$ $MARA Holdings(MARA)$ $Apple(AAPL)$ $IREN Ltd(IREN)$
