Most new traders open a chart and just see a confusing blur of red and green bars. They look random, but they are actually the absolute foundation of understanding price action.
Every single candlestick on your chart tells a self-contained story about the battle between buyers (bulls) and sellers (bears). If you can read the story, you can predict where the price is likely going.
Here is a visual breakdown of how to read a single candlestick, which you should save to your trading journal or education folder.
The Anatomy of a Candlestick
The image below illustrates exactly what each part of the bar represents:
-
The Body: The wide part. This shows the difference between the Open (where price started) and the Close (where price finished) for that time period. A big body means strong momentum from one side.
-
The Wicks/Shadows: The thin lines sticking out. They show the extreme High and Low prices that were reached during that period but could not be maintained. This usually represents rejection.
Bullish (Green) vs. Bearish (Red)
The color tells you who won the specific timeframe:
-
Green (Bullish): The Close is higher than the Open. The bulls took control and pushed the price up from where it started.
-
Red (Bearish): The Close is lower than the Open. The bears took control and crashed the price down from where it started.

3 "Must Know" Patterns for Beginners
You don't need to memorize dozens of exotic patterns. Start by recognizing these three simple, high-probability patterns, which we will combine with our Support/Resistance strategy in future posts:
How to Practice
Don't place trades based only on candlesticks yet. Load up a chart and:
-
Zoom in to a random area.
-
Point at a single candle and identify its Open, High, Low, and Close prices.
-
Explain the 'story' of that candle (e.g., "The bulls pushed up hard, but the bears rejected them, leaving a long wick at the top.")
Once you can do this easily, you are ready to combine candlestick reading with market structure.
