When investors talk about the AI infrastructure boom, the usual names come to mind: Nvidia, Broadcom, Micron, data centers, cooling systems, and power equipment.
But there is a much bigger question emerging:
Where will all the electricity needed to power the AI boom actually come from?
One potential answer is nuclear power.
And if nuclear energy enters a new growth cycle, the opportunity may not be limited to nuclear reactor operators.
There is another, much more upstream part of the supply chain that could become increasingly important:
nuclear fuel.
That is where Centrus Energy (NYSE: LEU) gets interesting.
LEU is not simply a uranium mining company.
More precisely, Centrus is a U.S.-based nuclear fuel and uranium enrichment company, and its biggest long-term opportunity may be its role in rebuilding America's domestic uranium enrichment capabilities.
Even more interesting is its position in HALEU — High-Assay Low-Enriched Uranium, a fuel expected to be important for many next-generation nuclear reactors.

1. What Does Centrus Energy Actually Do?
Let's start with the basics.
A nuclear reactor doesn't simply take uranium ore and put it into a reactor.
The nuclear fuel supply chain generally looks something like:
Uranium mining → conversion → enrichment → fuel fabrication → nuclear reactor
Centrus operates in one of the most critical parts of this chain:
uranium enrichment.
The company has two major areas of interest.
The first is traditional LEU, or Low-Enriched Uranium, which is widely used in today's commercial nuclear reactors.
The second — and arguably more exciting from an investment perspective — is:
HALEU, or High-Assay Low-Enriched Uranium.
In simple terms, traditional reactors generally use conventional low-enriched uranium, while many advanced reactor designs require fuel enriched to a higher level.
That's where HALEU comes in.
So you can think of it this way:
LEU is today's business.
HALEU could be tomorrow's growth engine.

2. How Does LEU Make Money?
This is important because many investors hear “nuclear” and immediately assume Centrus is simply a uranium miner.
It isn't.
Centrus generates revenue from nuclear fuel-related products and uranium enrichment services.
One important concept here is SWU — Separative Work Units.
You can think of SWU as a measure of the work required to separate and concentrate uranium-235 from natural uranium.
So the company's value isn't simply based on owning uranium deposits.
Its strategic value comes from its ability to:
take uranium and enrich it into material that can ultimately be used as nuclear fuel.
In 2025, Centrus generated approximately $449 million in total revenue, while its LEU segment generated roughly $346 million of revenue and approximately $112 million of gross profit.
That means the company already has a real operating business.
This isn't simply a pre-revenue nuclear technology story.

3. The Real Wild Card: HALEU
If traditional LEU represents Centrus' existing business, then HALEU is one of the biggest reasons investors are willing to look further into the company.
Why?
Because the U.S. is increasingly interested in advanced nuclear technologies.
That includes:
- Small Modular Reactors (SMRs)
- Advanced reactors
- Microreactors
- Other next-generation reactor designs
Many of these technologies are designed around fuel requirements that can include HALEU.
And that creates a potential supply problem.
Who is going to produce it?
This is where Centrus becomes particularly interesting.
For years, the U.S. has had limited domestic uranium enrichment capacity and has depended heavily on foreign supply chains.
Nuclear fuel is also not an ordinary commodity.
It is closely connected to:
energy security + national security + strategic supply chains.
That gives the U.S. government a strong incentive to rebuild domestic enrichment capabilities.
Centrus happens to be positioned directly in that part of the industry.

4. Why Is the U.S. Government Supporting Centrus?
This is one of the biggest differences between LEU and many speculative nuclear stocks.
Centrus isn't simply saying:
«“Maybe we'll produce HALEU someday.”»
The company has already been working with the U.S. Department of Energy on HALEU production.
In 2025, Centrus completed an important milestone by delivering 900 kilograms of HALEU to the Department of Energy.
That matters because it demonstrates that the company has moved beyond the purely theoretical stage.
It has already produced the material.
The next challenge is scaling production.

5. Then Came the Bigger Catalyst
Centrus' story became even more interesting in 2026.
The company announced approximately $900 million of HALEU enrichment contracts during the second quarter.
At the same time, Centrus reported potential backlog across its LEU and HALEU enrichment businesses of approximately $3 billion.
For a company that generated roughly $449 million of revenue in 2025, that is a number worth paying attention to.
Of course, investors need to understand an important distinction:
Backlog is not the same thing as near-term revenue.
These contracts can be spread over multiple years, and some portions of the potential backlog are contingent.
But the bigger message is still significant:
Customers are already looking to secure future nuclear fuel supply.

6. Where Does AI Come Into the Story?
This is the part I find most interesting.
AI's biggest long-term infrastructure problems may not be GPUs.
They may increasingly be:
electricity, grid capacity and reliable power.
A large AI data center can require hundreds of megawatts of continuous electricity, and the demand is expected to grow as AI training and inference expand.
Data centers need power:
24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Nuclear power has an important advantage here.
Unlike solar and wind, nuclear generation is designed to provide stable, continuous electricity.
So there is a potential chain reaction:
AI → Data Centers → Rising Electricity Demand → Nuclear Power → Advanced Reactors → HALEU Demand
And Centrus sits upstream in that chain.
That's why I wouldn't describe LEU simply as an “AI stock.”
The better description is:
«A nuclear fuel infrastructure play that could benefit indirectly from the enormous power requirements created by AI.»
That's a much more interesting thesis.

7. The Scarce Asset May Not Be Uranium
Another important point:
The world has uranium resources.
So the long-term bottleneck may not necessarily be the amount of uranium sitting underground.
The bottleneck could be:
enrichment capacity.
Especially U.S.-based enrichment capacity.
That is why Centrus is investing in expanding its centrifuge manufacturing capabilities and developing additional enrichment capacity.
The company is pursuing projects in Ohio and Tennessee, with additional commercial enrichment capacity targeted for the end of the decade.
If those projects are successfully executed, Centrus could potentially evolve from a nuclear fuel supplier into something much more strategically important:
a key part of America's domestic nuclear fuel infrastructure.
And that's where the long-term valuation story becomes interesting.

8. Is Centrus Actually Profitable?
Yes.
And that's another reason I find the company more interesting than many speculative nuclear names.
In 2025, Centrus generated approximately:
$449 million in revenue
$118 million in gross profit
$78 million in net income
The company also ended the year with approximately $2 billion in unrestricted cash.
In the second quarter of 2026, Centrus generated approximately $183 million of revenue and reported approximately $16.8 million of GAAP net income, or roughly $38.7 million of adjusted net income.
So this isn't simply a company burning cash while investors wait for a technology breakthrough.
There is already a profitable business underneath the story.

9. Why Could LEU Potentially Explode Higher?
Here's the key point.
The market isn't necessarily valuing Centrus based solely on what it earns today.
It's trying to price what the company could become.
Imagine a scenario where several trends happen at the same time:
U.S. nuclear power expands
+
SMRs begin commercial deployment
+
AI data centers require massive amounts of reliable electricity
+
The U.S. continues strengthening domestic nuclear fuel supply chains
+
HALEU becomes commercially important
If all of these trends materialize, Centrus could potentially benefit from several structural tailwinds simultaneously.
That's why a relatively small company can sometimes have much more upside potential than a mega-cap nuclear or utility company.

10. But Here Is the Catch
this is where we need to stay realistic.
LEU is not a guaranteed winner.
The biggest risk is valuation.
If investors already price in a decade of nuclear growth, the stock can fall even when the company continues executing well.
There is also the risk that:
HALEU commercialization takes longer than expected.
Advanced nuclear reactors still need to move from development to actual commercial deployment.
If that process is delayed, HALEU demand could also be pushed further into the future.
There is also execution risk.
Building enrichment capacity is extremely complicated.
It requires:
capital + engineering + manufacturing + regulatory approvals + time.
And finally, LEU is simply a volatile stock.
This is not VOO.
It is not Microsoft.
It is a high-beta strategic infrastructure play whose valuation depends heavily on future expectations.
That means the upside can be substantial.
But the downside can be substantial too.

11. My Take on LEU
I like to divide the AI investment opportunity into three layers.
Layer 1 — The obvious winners
Nvidia.
Microsoft.
Amazon.
These are companies already benefiting directly from the AI boom.
Layer 2 — AI infrastructure
Power equipment.
Data centers.
Cooling.
Networking.
These companies benefit as AI infrastructure expands.
Layer 3 — The next potential wave
Nuclear power.
Advanced reactors.
Nuclear fuel.
HALEU.
This is where Centrus sits.
And that's why LEU is interesting.
I'm not looking at it and saying:
“This is the next Nvidia.”
That's not the thesis.
The thesis is much more specific:
«If AI drives a structural increase in electricity demand, and the U.S. responds by accelerating nuclear power and rebuilding its domestic nuclear fuel supply chain, Centrus could become a strategically important supplier of the fuel required by that next generation of reactors.»
That's a very different investment thesis from simply buying another AI stock.

If I had to explain LEU in one sentence:
Centrus isn't simply mining uranium — it is positioned in the uranium enrichment and nuclear fuel supply chain, while building capabilities that could become increasingly important as the U.S. expands advanced nuclear power.
