HOOD is shifting gears — Prediction Markets just overtook Crypto
Robinhood just showed something big in the numbers.
In Q2, revenue from its prediction markets (event contracts) hit $156 million. Crypto trading brought in only $100 million.
That’s the first time prediction markets have beaten crypto at Robinhood. And a big part of the jump came from Rothera — the CFTC-licensed prediction market exchange they launched with Susquehanna in late May/June.
Rothera processed over 3.5 billion contracts in a very short time and quickly became one of the top platforms. World Cup volume helped a lot, and now football season is kicking in. Management is routing more and more flow through Rothera so they keep a bigger piece of the economics instead of sharing it with third-party exchanges.
This is not a small side product anymore. Prediction markets are growing much faster than the old crypto business, and it’s becoming a real revenue engine. Total company revenue hit a record $1.31 billion in the same quarter.
The stock has been reacting every time this story gets stronger — analysts keep raising targets, and overnight moves have been sharp whenever Rothera or prediction market numbers surprise.
What I’m watching:
• How much more volume shifts to Rothera in Q3/Q4 (especially with NFL)
• Whether they can keep growing this without regulatory pushback
• If prediction markets stay sticky even after big sports events end
Robinhood used to be known for free stock trades and crypto. Now the growth story is clearly moving to prediction markets. That’s a meaningful change in the business.
Anyone else following HOOD because of Rothera? What’s your take — sustainable growth driver or just a temporary sports-driven spike?
