The EU is close to finishing an investigation into Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure. It is expected to find that both cloud services meet the requirements to come under the EU’s tech rules.
Why does this matter?
AWS and Azure are two of the biggest cloud platforms in the world. They provide the computing power that many companies use for AI, software and data storage.
If the EU officially brings them under these rules, they could face new requirements around things like how customers switch providers and how cloud services work with other systems.
My take: I don’t see this as a major threat to either company right now. AWS and Azure are deeply embedded in the cloud and AI market, and new rules won’t suddenly change that. But over time, extra regulation could increase costs and make it harder to move quickly in Europe.
For me, the bigger question is whether these rules actually create more competition in cloud — or simply add another layer of complexity.
What do you think — positive or negative for $Amazon.com(AMZN)$ and $Microsoft(MSFT)$ ?👀
