💾 HARD-DRIVE STOCKS JUST GOT HIT — BUT IS THE FEAR OVERDONE?

$Seagate Technology PLC(STX)$  and $Western Digital(WDC)$  were hit Friday after reports that Toshiba plans to double its HDD production capacity for AI data centres.

Investors immediately worried that more supply could eventually hurt prices and profits.

But there’s another side to the story.

AI data centres need huge amounts of storage, and the HDD market is still tight. Toshiba's expansion is also not happening overnight — the extra capacity is planned for fiscal 2027.

There are also questions about how much extra supply Toshiba can actually add. The company relies on outside suppliers for important components, so increasing drive production depends on those suppliers increasing their own capacity too.

That’s why I think this story is more interesting than simply saying “more supply = bad.”

The real question is whether Toshiba can add capacity faster than AI data centres add storage demand.

Seagate and Western Digital have already had a huge run this year, so investors were probably looking for any reason to take some profits.
