AI Is Booming, So Why Are Storage Stocks Falling? SNDK Deserves a Closer Look

The market is sending an interesting signal: AI demand remains strong, but investors are becoming more selective about which companies can actually turn that demand into sustainable profits.

On October 15, US stocks rebounded, with the Dow rising 1.08%, the S&P 500 gaining 0.33%, and the Nasdaq adding just 0.08%. Beneath the headline gains, however, technology stocks continued to show signs of weakness. Investors are increasingly questioning AI capital expenditure, financing costs, competition, and how much future growth is already priced into valuations.

Today, I want to focus on a stock worth watching: $SanDisk (SNDK)$.

SanDisk is not an AI chip designer or a company developing large language models. It specializes in flash storage, particularly NAND technology. As AI models, data centers, and enterprise applications generate and process more data, storage becomes an increasingly important part of the infrastructure.

But here is the catch: growing demand does not automatically translate into permanently high profits.

1. Why Is SNDK Worth Watching?

SanDisk's reported fiscal fourth-quarter 2026 revenue reached approximately $8.97 billion, representing 51% sequential growth. Full-year revenue was approximately $20.25 billion, up 175% year over year. Its data center business was a major growth driver.

These figures highlight an important point: AI-related storage demand is not merely a market narrative. It can translate into substantial business growth.

However, investors need to distinguish between two things: a company delivering strong results and its stock being attractively valued.

After a significant rally, expectations for SNDK may already be elevated. Concerns about future supply, pricing pressure, and competition can weigh on the stock even when current operating performance remains strong.

That is the challenge with cyclical businesses: investors often mistake peak profitability for sustainable profitability.

2. Three Questions Investors Should Be Asking

First: How Sustainable Is AI-Driven Storage Demand?

AI infrastructure requires more than GPUs. Training, inference, and enterprise AI applications also depend on increasingly sophisticated storage systems.

This creates a potential long-term growth opportunity for NAND manufacturers.

However, rising demand alone does not guarantee rising profits. Investors must also monitor customer spending, NAND pricing trends, and management's forward guidance.

A strong quarter is encouraging, but the direction of the next several quarters matters more.

Second: Could Chinese Manufacturers Change the Competitive Landscape?

China's progress in memory technology, including developments involving CXMT, has attracted market attention.

One important distinction: CXMT primarily focuses on DRAM, while SanDisk's core business centers on NAND flash. They are not direct competitors across every product category.

Nevertheless, expanding memory production and improving technology can influence the broader semiconductor supply chain.

The risk is not simply that a competitor appears. It is that additional capacity eventually puts pressure on product prices and industry margins.

Investors should neither exaggerate the competitive threat nor dismiss it.

Third: Has the Market Already Priced In Too Much Growth?

This may be the most important question.

A stock's valuation reflects not only what a company earns today, but also what investors expect it to earn in the future.

If current earnings are near the peak of a storage cycle, a seemingly low forward P/E ratio could be misleading. If NAND prices weaken and profits normalize, today's earnings may not be a reliable basis for valuing the business.

On the other hand, if AI-related demand remains stronger than expected and SanDisk maintains its competitive position, the market could be underestimating its future earnings potential.

Both scenarios deserve consideration.

3. What Am I Watching Before Making a Decision?

I would not automatically treat SNDK's price decline as a buying opportunity.

Instead, I would focus on three indicators:

1. NAND pricing: Are flash memory prices remaining firm, or are signs of oversupply beginning to emerge?

2. Earnings quality: How much of the company's profit growth comes from sustainable demand, and how much depends on favorable pricing conditions?

3. Forward guidance: Management's revenue outlook, margin expectations, and assessment of future demand will be more informative than headline growth figures alone.

A declining share price accompanied by resilient fundamentals could create an opportunity for further research.

But if the stock falls alongside weakening NAND prices, shrinking margins, and deteriorating guidance, the market may be responding to a genuine deterioration in earnings prospects.

4. My Final Take

The most interesting question about SNDK is not whether its share price can double again.

It is whether the company can convert today's AI-driven demand into sustainable earnings over several years.

Investors commonly make two mistakes with cyclical stocks. They assume unusually strong profits will last forever during an industry boom, or they become so pessimistic during a sell-off that they overlook a business whose fundamentals remain intact.

Both can be costly.

My view: SNDK deserves a place on the watchlist, but a falling share price alone does not make it cheap. The priority is to assess the sustainability of earnings before deciding what price is worth paying.

As the AI trade matures, the biggest opportunities may not necessarily be in the stocks rising the fastest. They may emerge in companies where market pessimism becomes excessive while the underlying business remains fundamentally sound.

For SNDK, that is the opportunity worth investigating—and the risk worth respecting.
