India’s biggest opportunity may also be its biggest investment trap.

The UTI India Nifty 50 Index ETF VCC launches on SGX on 12 November, giving Singapore investors access to 50 leading Indian companies without an Indian brokerage account.

India’s domestic consumption, infrastructure spending and financial-sector expansion offer compelling long-term growth drivers. Its different sector composition may also diversify portfolios heavily concentrated in US technology stocks.

But here’s the catch: economic growth does not automatically translate into stock market returns. Currency depreciation can erode gains, valuations still matter, and past outperformance guarantees nothing.

My view? India deserves consideration as a long-term portfolio diversifier, but investors should avoid confusing a promising economy with a bargain-priced market.
