$NVIDIA(NVDA)$ What drove the Oct 21 bounce — and why it didn't hold
Short answer: the Oct 21 rebound (+2.54% to $221.97, off a $212.77 intraday low) was a sentiment and positioning bounce, not a fundamental one. The catalyst was Jensen Huang's GTC Berlin keynote plus a Goldman Sachs note the same day, which pushed back on the "AI capex is peaking" narrative. The very next session gave it all back — and more.
The catalyst: GTC Berlin + Goldman
At GTC Berlin (Oct 20-21) NVIDIA made a set of supply-chain and demand disclosures that directly addressed the market's main worry

:
Supply chain expansion — substrate capacity up ~2.5x, CoWoS-R advanced packaging capacity up ~3x, which implies preparation for materially larger GPU shipments.
Physical AI revenue — already ~$11bn in the first half of FY27, exceeding roughly 30% of the whole of FY26, evidencing revenue diversification beyond training.
DSX POD — compresses data-centre deployment from months to about two weeks.
Capital return — an authorised buyback of roughly $235bn, which acts as a structural bid under the stock.
Goldman Sachs, which attended the keynote, kept a Buy rating and a $300 target (30x normalised EPS of $10), noting the immediate price impact was limited but that it reinforced the view AI deployment remains on track

. Huang also told CNBC that demand from neoclouds is "off the charts," with a shortage of working capital — not demand — the constraint

. Separately, HUMAIN AI said it would begin deploying Blackwell Ultra in Q4 2026 as part of an up-to-84MW AI compute build-out, equivalent to roughly 27,000 GPUs

Why the bounce was fragile
Three things undercut it:
The buying was not broad. Large-order flow was net outflow on Oct 21 (big inflow ~$882m vs big outflow ~$964m), and the 5-day large-order series was negative every session from Oct 15 through Oct 21 — including the rally day. Small-order money did most of the buying. That is a retail-led bounce, not institutional accumulation.
The sector was still in a downtrend. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index

fell 12.3% between Oct 12 and Oct 22, closing at 10,732 — its lowest of the window — on the same day NVIDIA dropped 4.40% to $212.21. A single name cannot sustain a rebound against that tape.
The bear case was never answered. The market's concern is not AI demand but the financing of it — CoreWeave's 2032 unsecured bonds traded to a ~15% yield on Oct 14, a stress test of the debt-funded compute build-out. Huang's own comment that scarce capital is limiting neocloud growth arguably confirms that constraint rather than refutes it
