$APLD 20261106 24.0 CALL$ APLD Sell-Put Candidates — Data View

Spot: $18.47 (2026-10-27, intraday). APLD is a high-volatility name: 30-day IV ~99.8%, 52-week IV average ~108%, and the stock sits at just the 2.9th percentile of its 52-week range (52w high $50.73, 52w low $17.50 — it's up only 5.6% from the low, down 63.6% from the high). That combination — very high IV, price near the bottom of the range — is exactly the setup where "low risk" needs to be defined carefully.

The candidate table (expiry 2026-11-20, 25 DTE)

Strike Premium (per contract) Period return Annualized Profit probability Moneyness vs $18.47

$15.0

watchlist

$54 3.73% 50.07% 78.61% ~19% OTM

$14.0 $34 2.49% 35.10% 84.72% ~24% OTM

$13.0 $22 1.72% 23.76% 89.56% ~30% OTM

$12.0 $14 1.18% 15.79% 93.11% ~35% OTM

Note the trade-off is monotonic: the further OTM you go, the higher the profit probability but the lower the premium. There is no strike that is simultaneously high-yield and high-probability.

What "low risk" actually means here

The relevant risk metric for a sell-put is not profit probability — it's the breakeven (strike minus premium) and how far that sits below spot:

$15.0 strike → breakeven ≈ $14.46 , i.e. ~21.7% below spot

$14.0 strike → breakeven ≈ $13.66 , ~26.0% below spot

$13.0 strike → breakeven ≈ $12.78 , ~30.8% below spot

$12.0 strike → breakeven ≈ $11.86 , ~35.8% below spot

So the "safest" structures in the list are the $12–$13 strikes: you'd need APLD to fall roughly another 30%+ in 25 days before the position loses money at expiry. That is a real buffer, but it is not the same as "safe" — this stock has fallen ~24.7% in 20 days and ~32.6% in 60 days, so a 30% drawdown inside a month is within its recent behavioural range.

Corroborating market structure

Put open interest (2026-11-20) clusters at the $16 strike (4,832 contracts) — the max-OI put strike, i.e. the level where positioning is heaviest. The $15 strike holds ~977 and $14 ~600. This is the nearest "support" implied by option positioning.

Max pain for the same expiry is $22.0 — above spot. Max pain is only a hypothesis about where price may gravitate into expiry, not a forecast, but it does mean the option market's payout distribution is not currently skewed toward a further collapse.

Call/put ratio 3.28 — call activity dominates, which is typical for a beaten-down high-beta name where traders are buying upside optionality.

IV context: current 30-day IV of ~99.8% sits at the 27th percentile of the past year (IV rank 43), well below the 52-week high of 139% (2025-10-31) and above the low of 69.8% (2026-10-12). So premiums are rich in absolute terms but not at a 1-year extreme — you are not selling at peak IV.

Two material risks that could invalidate the "low risk" framing

Gap risk / earnings. APLD is a data-centre / AI-infrastructure name with a history of violent single-day moves (today's intraday amplitude alone is 6.4%). A negative financing, contract or sector headline can gap the stock through any of these strikes before you can react — a short put has no stop that works over a gap.

The downtrend is intact. Price is below its 20-day ($24.53) and 60-day ($27.39) closes and near the 52-week low ($17.50). Selling puts into a persistent downtrend means repeatedly accepting assignment into a falling asset; the "low risk" is only low if the decline decelerates.

Monitoring indicators

Whether $16 (max-OI put strike) and the $17.50 52-week low hold as support.

IV trend: a further drop toward the 70% area would compress the premium you're being paid for the same risk.

Any upcoming capital-raising, contract or earnings news for the name — that is the main gap catalyst.

One framing note: the choice of strike is a direct trade-off between premium and distance-from-spot, and that choice depends on your own view of APLD's downside and your willingness to be assigned the shares. I can pull the contract-level Greeks (delta, theta, breakeven) for any specific strike if you want to see the sensitivity in more detail.

15 strike delta should be around 0.21 and theta near 0.07 here. With IV near 100%, that theta only matters if the slide actually slows.
