$Berkshire Hathaway(BRK.B)$ Short answer: the rally is mostly a re-rating of the post-Buffett story plus a capital-allocation shift, not an earnings upgrade — and at ~1.57x book, just 0.25% below its 52-week high, the easy part of that re-rating has already happened. Sustainability now depends on the 7 November Q3 report confirming that operating profit and buybacks hold up at these prices.

Note on the level:

Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.B)

watchlist

is quoted at $548.56 on 2026-10-27, +1.17% on the day, but the record high on record is $549.96 (2026-10-22) — so it is 0.25% below the peak, not above it. It sits at the 98th percentile of its 52-week range ($464.01–$549.96).

What is actually driving it

1. The "Buffett departure discount" is unwinding. The previous all-time high was set on 2025-05-02, right around Buffett's retirement announcement; the stock then fell for months as investors fretted about the succession. Breaking that level is being read as the market endorsing Greg Abel's leadership

Tiger News

Tiger News

. Abel took over as CEO on 2026-01-01 and Buffett stepped down as chairman on 2026-09-18, handing that role to Howard Buffett — so the governance transition is now essentially complete

.

2. Abel has visibly changed the capital-allocation posture. In Q2 2026 Berkshire ended 14 consecutive quarters of net equity selling, buying $23.5bn and selling $3.7bn — about $19.8bn net — plus ~$4.5bn of buybacks (the largest quarter in about five years), ~$9.4bn for OxyChem and $6.8bn for Taylor Morrison

Xueqiu

Xueqiu

. Cash fell ~4% to roughly $364.7bn, the first sequential decline in four years

Xueqiu

. Operating profit rose 16% YoY to $12.98bn, with manufacturing/retail +24%, energy +27% and BNSF +6%; insurance underwriting was the weak spot, down 13%

Xueqiu

.

3. The Alphabet stake gave it an AI-linked leg. Alphabet is now a top-five holding (~$37.8bn across A and C shares at end-June), built partly via a $10bn private placement at a 6.5% discount that Abel negotiated

Xueqiu

Xueqiu

. That has softened the "value-only, missed the tech era" framing.

4. Rotation into defensive quality. The stock is +10.2% over the past month and +9.0% over 20 sessions, while the report notes the Nasdaq/S&P and AI names have been correcting — consistent with money rotating toward a cash-rich, low-beta compounder

Xueqiu

.

Is it sustainable?

The bull case is structural rather than momentum: ~$365bn of cash and Treasuries is roughly a third of total assets, earnings are diversified across insurance, rail, energy and retail, and the buyback is price-discretionary (management only repurchases when it judges the stock below intrinsic value)

Xueqiu

Xueqiu

. That gives a valuation floor of sorts and a large optionality on any market dislocation.

The constraint is price. At $548.56 the shares trade at 1.57x book (book value ~$535.60/share, i.e. only ~2.4% above stated net assets), 13.7x TTM EPS of $39.97 and 3.05x sales, with ROE of 12.1%. Two things follow:

Buyback support likely fades here. Berkshire repurchased ~7.14m B-shares in June at an average ~$487.98

Xueqiu

. With the stock now ~12% above that level and at a fresh high, the same price discipline that drove the Q2 buyback argues against large-scale repurchases at current levels — one report explicitly flags this

Xueqiu

. The very flow that helped the stock is self-limiting.

The earnings optics are flattered. H1 net income of $357.7bn... more precisely $35.77bn, +110.8% YoY, was driven mainly by ~$15.6bn of unrealized equity gains and an easy comparison against last year's Kraft Heinz write-down — management itself warns not to read GAAP net income as operating performance

Xueqiu

Xueqiu

. Q2's headline doubling is not an operating-earnings doubling.

Sell-side coverage is thin and lukewarm: 5 analysts, 40% buy / 60% hold, mean target ~$490 (range $313–$628), i.e. the consensus mean sits below the current price. That is a small sample and stale (last updated May 2026), so treat it as sentiment context rather than a valuation anchor. UBS has reportedly lifted its target to $595

Xueqiu

.

What would validate the move: the 2026-11-07 Q3 report showing (a) operating earnings growth continuing without the investment-gain boost, (b) insurance underwriting stabilising after the -13% Q2, and (c) buyback dollars still meaningful at these prices. What would break it: a Q3 in which operating profit stalls while the stock is priced at a book-value premium near its historical top, or a market-wide risk-on rotation that pulls money back out of defensives — the stock's ~9% 12-month gain has been driven by a sharp recent burst rather than steady compounding.
