$Tesla Motors(TSLA)$ Tesla (TSLA) — Recent Bullish vs Bearish News

Snapshot (2026-10-27 pre-market): $391.62, +5.21% on the session, +10.99% over the past 20 sessions; 52-week range $297.38–$498.83, currently ~46.8% of the way up that range and ~21.5% below the 52-week high. Market cap ~$1.55T; PE (TTM) ~430x, forward PE ~228x, PB ~17.3x. The stock fell ~12.9% over the past year.

The news flow is genuinely two-sided, and the split is not "good news vs bad news" but narrative vs near-term earnings : the autonomous-driving/robotics story is strengthening, while the profit line and the capex trajectory are weakening.

Bullish

FSD is becoming a real revenue line. RBC noted FSD was attached to more than 75% of Q3 North American deliveries, with 1.74 million paid subscribers worldwide — close to ~$1bn in annual recurring revenue — and management calling software its biggest demand driver

Tiger News

.

Robotaxi fleet scaling. The Cybercab fleet in Austin has grown roughly tenfold since its September launch, with 24-hour service targeted by year-end and Dallas as the next market

Tiger News

. Third-party tracking cited the unsupervised fleet rising from 57 vehicles at end-June to 156 by end-August

.

Q3 print beat on the metrics that matter to cash. Adjusted EPS of $0.48 beat expectations, free cash flow came in at +$1.53bn versus consensus for negative FCF, and capex was ~$3.2bn below plan; auto gross margin recovered to 18.1%, suggesting the worst of the price war has passed

Xueqiu

.

New capacity coming online: Cybercab carrying paying passengers in Austin from 3 September, Optimus production line started at Fremont, Tesla Semi in production in Nevada, the Texas Megafactory commissioned, and cumulative global deliveries past 10 million units

Analyst upgrades: Barclays raised its target to $450 from $370

Sina Finance

; Morgan Stanley raised its target to $410 on faster autonomous-driving expansion

Tiger News

; RBC kept Outperform with a $480 target

Bearish

Profitability is deteriorating even as revenue holds. Q3 revenue was ~$28.05bn, roughly flat, but operating income fell to $718m, down ~56% YoY, with research & development at $2.761bn versus $1.630bn a year earlier

Xueqiu

Xueqiu

. Net profit was reported down ~43% YoY

.

The capex cut is being read as a delay, not efficiency. Institutions reportedly interpreted the lowered 2026 capex guidance (~$20bn) as pushing out the Robotaxi/Optimus narrative — a "permanent" negative on the fundamental story — which is why the stock sold off intraday after the report despite the headline FCF beat

Xueqiu

.

Valuation leaves no room for disappointment. ~430x TTM earnings and ~228x forward, with a large share of the market cap derived from Robotaxi/FSD/Optimus optionality rather than the car business

.

Sell-side is split, and one major house just cut hard. China Merchants Securities International cut 2026–2028 net profit forecasts by 41%/44%/53% and lowered its target to $354 from $441, keeping Neutral — long-term positive on FSD/Robotaxi/Optimus but flagging that scaled profitability is still unproven

Sina Finance

. Goldman Sachs was also reported as unconvinced that Robotaxi and Optimus can support the narrative near term

Tiger News

.

Competitive and governance overhangs: BYD/Xiaomi global expansion pressuring share, Robotaxi regulatory/safety risk and Waymo competition, and Musk's divided attention across X, SpaceX and xAI

Xueqiu

. There is also shareholder debate around a potential xAI-related transaction and voting control

How to read the balance

The market is currently paying for execution on unsupervised Robotaxi scale and FSD monetisation, not for car deliveries. That makes the next few catalysts unusually binary: year-end 24-hour Austin service and the Dallas launch, the pace of the unsupervised fleet, and any evidence that Optimus moves from demo to volume. The bullish case is that software ARR plus fleet growth re-rates the story again; the bearish case is that R&D and capex keep rising while operating margin stays near 1–2%, in which case a ~430x multiple has little fundamental support.

Two risks that would invalidate the bullish read: (1) Robotaxi expansion slipping past the year-end 24-hour/Dallas milestones, or a safety incident triggering regulatory rollback; (2) further downward revisions to 2026–2027 profit estimates if R&D and SG&A keep outrunning gross-margin recovery.

What to monitor: quarterly auto gross margin and operating margin, FSD subscriber count and attach rate, unsupervised fleet size by city, capex guidance versus actual spend, and the spread of sell-side targets (currently roughly $354 to $480).
