$SOXL 20261030 120.0 CALL$ Short answer: not "too pricey" on a relative basis — but the premium is being paid for a reason, and the 70th percentile overstates how rich IV is right now.

What the numbers actually say

Metric (2026-10-27) Value

30-day IV 136.76%

IV percentile (30d) 70.52%

IV / HV ratio 1.09 (implying HV ≈ 125.5%)

Chain IV ~159.8%

Chain expected move ~15.1%

Call/Put ratio 1.28 (calls 262.1k vs puts 204.8k)

Options volume 466.9k contracts

The single most important line is the IV/HV ratio of 1.09. A seller is being paid roughly 9% above the volatility the underlying has actually been realising — a thin edge, not a fat one. My own calculation from the daily closes confirms this: 20-day realised volatility is about 139.8%, 40-day about 147.4%, and the last 19 sessions (since the 2026-10-01 peak) about 150.7%. So IV at 136.76% is actually below short-term realised vol — the percentile reading of 70.52% is a statement about where IV sits versus its own past year, not about whether it exceeds what the market is delivering.

Why the percentile is misleading here

SOXL is a 3x leveraged semiconductor vehicle, so its "normal" IV band is structurally enormous. The price went from 169.83 on 2026-10-06 to 80.22 on 2026-10-22 — a 53% drawdown in twelve sessions — then bounced 8.31% on 2026-10-27 to 90.50 (pre-market 95.20, amplitude 10.69%, turnover 39.8% of float). Daily swings of 8–15% are routine. In that regime, 136.76% IV is mid-range, not extreme; the 70th percentile partly reflects that IV has already fallen back from the panic highs of the selloff rather than that it is elevated.

The seller's real problem is path, not price

Selling premium into 137% IV on a 3x ETF has two structural traps:

Volatility drag / decay asymmetry. A 3x daily-reset product does not mean-revert like a single stock. After a move of this magnitude, the fund's value is path-dependent: a choppy sideways tape bleeds the underlying even if the index is flat, which can push options that looked safe into the money. Realised vol staying near 150% means a 1-standard-deviation monthly move is roughly ±15% on the ETF itself.

Gap risk is not priced by delta. The 2026-10-22 session alone was a 90.59 open to 80.22 low on 180.8M shares — nearly triple the 40-day average volume of 71.7M. Short-dated short puts or strangles carried through a session like that lose far more than the premium collected. Note the large-order flow is dominated by put buying (e.g. 2027-01-15 95 puts, 2029-01-19 55 puts, 2026-10-23 135/131 puts), which is consistent with hedgers paying up rather than sellers dominating.

Where the edge does exist: the term structure. Chain IV (~160%) sits above 30-day IV (136.76%), and the expected move is ~15.1% — if you sell, longer-dated contracts carry the richer premium, and the IV/HV gap of 1.09 is the entire compensation for taking the risk.

What would change the picture

Invalidation of the "not expensive" read: if realised vol compresses toward 100–110% while IV stays above 130%, the IV/HV ratio would jump toward 1.2–1.3 and premium would genuinely be rich. Watch the 20-day realised vol against the 136.76% IV line.

The other risk: a renewed leg down in semis. With the ETF 70% below its 52-week high of 302 but still 222% above the 28.12 low, the position in the 52-week range is only 22.8% — the distribution is wide in both directions, and short gamma in this name is a bet against a tail, not a bet on a range.

Practical framing: the IV percentile alone is a weak signal for a leveraged ETF; the IV/HV ratio and the realised-vol trend are the ones that matter. At 1.09, sellers are being paid a modest premium for genuinely extreme underlying risk — a small edge, not a mispricing.
