$SoFi Technologies Inc.(SOFI)$ SoFi just exploded 14.6% — and it wasn't just the earnings beat.
Here's the fun part: the numbers were good, but the real fireworks came from a crowd that got caught offside.
• A fresh "Buy" landed at the open. Monness Crespi & Hardt kicked off coverage with a Buy and a $20 target. Sounds big — except Wall Street's average target was already ~$20 while the stock sat at $14.46. So the rating didn't create the upside; it just gave everyone permission to go grab it.
• The shorts were packed in like sardines. Short interest climbed 27% to 219.6M shares by mid-October, and days-to-cover doubled from 2.1 to 4.7 — right as the stock hit a 52-week low of $14.22. Then SoFi beat and raised. Cue the scramble. That forced buying is what turned a good day into a 93.6M-share day (6.8x normal volume).
• The order book was thin up top. 70% of positions sit between $14.40 and $17.40, with a dense wall right at $16.00–$16.10. Average cost is $16.32 and only 55.6% of holders are in profit — so there's a queue of near-break-even sellers waiting just overhead.
• Options traders went full casino. The big tickets were short-dated $16 and $17 calls expiring in days, plus $0.02 lottery tickets on December $32 calls. That's adrenaline, not conviction.
• And here's the tell: net money inflow was a measly $16.8M on $1.52B of trading — about 1.1%. Big orders were basically flat. Only 9 of the last 50 sessions saw net inflows. Translation: this was a squeeze, not a stampede of new institutional money.
The beat and raise are genuine, but the extra juice is mechanical — shorts covering into a thin book while retail chased calls. That fuel burns out.
