Hold or Sell? 7 Earnings Reports, 7 Different Risks. Here Is My Playbook.

Isleigh
10-28 19:54

This is the part of earnings season I love.

Within roughly 48 hours, we get results from:

Microsoft. Alphabet. Amazon. Intel. Strategy. Coinbase. SanDisk.

But I would make a mistake if I treated all seven the same.

Some I would be comfortable holding.

Some I would deliberately reduce.

And for some, I would rather own the stock that reacts to their earnings than gamble on the reporter itself.

My rule:

The bigger the information gap, the smaller my pre-earnings position.

Here is how I am approaching them.

🟒 1. GOOGL: MY FAVOURITE MEGA-CAP ASYMMETRY

Alphabet enters tonight's report from a very different position from Microsoft.

GOOG has already corrected from roughly $338.50 toward $314-$315.

That matters.

Expectations have come down.

I want three things:

Search resilience

Google Cloud acceleration

AI monetisation without margin destruction

If Search remains healthy while Cloud accelerates, the argument that AI is destroying Google's economics becomes much harder to defend.

Would I hold?

YES, partially.

I actually prefer GOOG's earnings risk/reward to Microsoft's because some disappointment has already been priced in.

My map:

🟑 $310-$315: current battleground

🟒 $300-$305: first pick

🟒 $285-$295: preferred pick

🟒 $325-$330: first reclaim

🟒 $338-$340: major confirmation

A strong report could put $350-$360 back into play.

πŸ”΅ 2. MSFT: HOLD QUALITY, BUT DO NOT CHASE EXPECTATIONS

Microsoft is the cleaner AI business.

But that does not automatically make it the better earnings trade.

At roughly $530, expectations are high.

The number I want is not merely EPS.

It is:

Azure growth relative to AI capex growth.

If Azure accelerates while capex begins stabilising, Microsoft proves that its enormous AI investment is becoming operating leverage.

That is bullish.

But if spending rises again while Azure merely meets expectations?

A good quarter could still produce a bad stock reaction.

Would I hold?

YES, if it is a long-term core position.

I would be reluctant to open a large new position immediately before the print.

🟑 $520-$525: first support

🟒 $505-$515: preferred pick

🟒 $545-$550: breakout

Above that, $565-$580 becomes interesting.

🟒 3. AMZN: THURSDAY'S MOST IMPORTANT CLOUD READ

Amazon reports Thursday.

Ignore the temptation to obsess over headline retail revenue.

I am watching AWS.

The equation:

AWS growth + AI demand + margins - capex = quality of the quarter

If AWS accelerates and cash generation holds despite infrastructure spending, Amazon can justify the AI buildout.

If capex explodes while AWS merely meets expectations, investors may apply the same punishment we have seen elsewhere.

Would I hold?

YES, but not oversized.

Amazon has enough operating engines that I am more comfortable carrying it than a single-narrative speculative stock.

But AWS decides whether I add afterward.

🟑 4. INTC: I WOULD RATHER BUY CONFIRMATION

Intel may have the most fascinating earnings setup.

The stock is around $95 after a substantial rally.

But I do not care whether quantum generates another headline.

I want:

DCAI profit ↑ + Foundry loss ↓

That is Intel's real turnaround equation.

Then I want gross margin around 42% or better.

If server demand remains exceptional while Foundry losses narrow, Intel's improving businesses are increasingly financing its manufacturing comeback.

Would I hold?

SMALLER POSITION.

At $95, I think investors should demand evidence.

🟑 $92-$96: hold/watch

🟒 $84-$88: first pick

🟒 $76-$82: preferred pick

🟒 $100: psychological breakout

🟒 $105-$110: confirmation

Intel is one where I am willing to pay slightly more after the thesis is confirmed.

πŸ”₯ 5. MSTR: THIS IS NOT REALLY AN EARNINGS TRADE

Strategy reports Thursday, but I think treating MSTR like Microsoft or Amazon is a category error.

MSTR's accounting earnings can be enormous because Bitcoin movements flow through its reported results.

But the stock ultimately trades around something else:

BTC price + Bitcoin holdings + financing ability + premium to Bitcoin NAV

That means I would not make a hold/sell decision based primarily on whether Strategy beats EPS.

I would ask:

What is Bitcoin doing?

Is MSTR's NAV premium expanding or contracting?

Can it continue raising capital efficiently?

Would I hold?

If my thesis is leveraged Bitcoin exposure, yes.

If I am buying purely for an earnings beat, no.

That distinction is critical.

πŸ”₯ 6. COIN: PROBABLY THE MOST BINARY REPORT

Coinbase also reports Thursday.

And this one can move violently.

The earnings engine is tied to:

Crypto prices

Trading volumes

USDC/stablecoin economics

Subscriptions and services

Regulatory progress

That creates an interesting read-through for another stock I care about:

CRCL

A strong Coinbase report showing healthy USDC activity and improving crypto participation could strengthen sentiment toward Circle ahead of its own Nov 4 report.

So I may not need a huge COIN position to trade COIN earnings.

I can watch CRCL.

That is the kind of second-order trade I like.

Would I hold COIN?

Smaller than MSFT, GOOGL or AMZN.

The potential overnight move is larger, so my position should be smaller.

Not larger.

🟒 7. SNDK: THE MEMORY REPORT I CARE ABOUT MOST

SanDisk may not have the market cap of Microsoft.

But for my current AI thesis, its earnings could be extremely important.

Why?

Because SK Hynix tells us about HBM.

SanDisk tells us whether the boom is spreading into NAND and enterprise storage.

If SNDK reports:

strong enterprise SSD demand

strong NAND pricing

disciplined supply

then we may be moving from an HBM boom toward a:

BROADER MEMORY SUPERCYCLE

That matters for MU.

So again, I do not necessarily need to gamble heavily on SNDK earnings.

I can use SNDK as information for my Micron thesis.

Would I hold?

YES, but smaller than MU.

SNDK carries more earnings volatility.

MU remains my preferred bridge between HBM, DRAM and the wider AI memory cycle.

🧠 THIS IS MY REAL EARNINGS STRATEGY

Here is where I think many investors get earnings wrong.

They ask:

β€œWill the stock beat?”

I ask:

β€œWhere will the new information create the best mispricing?”

That leads me to three different trades.

TRADE 1: HOLD THE REPORTER

GOOGL is my favourite example.

Expectations have already reset.

I want some exposure if the thesis is confirmed.

TRADE 2: BUY THE REPORTER AFTER CONFIRMATION

INTC is my example.

At $95, I would rather see margins and Foundry economics first.

TRADE 3: TRADE THE READ-THROUGH

This may be my favourite.

Strong MSFT/GOOGL/AMZN cloud β†’ MU/NVDA/SNDK

Strong SNDK memory β†’ MU

Strong COIN crypto/USDC β†’ CRCL

Strong MSTR commentary + BTC β†’ crypto complex

Sometimes the best earnings trade is not the company reporting.

That is the edge I am looking for this week.

🚦 MY HOLD-OVERNIGHT RANKING

πŸ₯‡ GOOGL - HOLD PARTIAL

Best mega-cap asymmetry.

πŸ₯ˆ MSFT - HOLD CORE

Best AI execution, but higher expectations.

πŸ₯‰ AMZN - HOLD PARTIAL

AWS determines whether I add.

4️⃣ SNDK - SMALLER HOLD

Important memory thesis, higher volatility.

5️⃣ INTC - SMALL / WAIT FOR CONFIRMATION

The stock has already rerated substantially.

6️⃣ COIN - SMALL

Great upside, much larger overnight variance.

7️⃣ MSTR - DECISION BASED ON BTC, NOT EPS

I would not pretend traditional earnings analysis is the main driver here.

THE STOCKS I AM NOT FORGETTING

Ironically, two of the stocks I may watch most closely do not report this week.

MU

Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon and SanDisk can collectively tell me whether AI infrastructure and memory demand remain strong.

CRCL

Coinbase can provide an important crypto and stablecoin read-through before Circle reports Nov 4.

That is why this earnings week is bigger than the companies actually releasing numbers.

Each report sends information through an entire chain.

Cloud β†’ AI infrastructure β†’ GPUs β†’ Memory β†’ Storage

and

Crypto activity β†’ Stablecoins β†’ USDC β†’ CRCL

MY CALL

I am not choosing between:

Hold everything

or

Sell everything.

My approach is:

Hold where expectations give me asymmetry.

Reduce where the market already demands perfection.

Wait where confirmation is worth paying for.

And use one company's earnings to trade another company's thesis.

That final point may be the most important.

Because by Friday, I do not just want to know whether seven companies beat consensus.

I want to know whether:

Big Tech proved AI can generate returns.

Intel proved its turnaround can generate margins.

SanDisk proved the memory boom is broadening.

Coinbase proved crypto participation remains healthy.

And Strategy confirmed whether capital markets still reward leveraged Bitcoin exposure.

Those answers will determine what I want to own next.

Not merely what I hold overnight.

I am not a financial advisor. Trade wisely, Comrades!

Which would you be most comfortable holding through earnings: GOOGL, MSFT, AMZN, INTC, SNDK, COIN or MSTR?

🎁 Write & Win | Earnings Season: Hold or Sell?
Whenever a company is about to report, investors face the same question: Earnings tonightβ€”do you hold or sell? Some investors hold with confidence: β€œI'm in it for the long term. One night won't change my view.” Some trim their positions: β€œLock in some gains and sleep better.” Others keep cash ready: β€œIf it drops, I'll buy more!” One earnings report can send a stock soaringβ€”or fallingβ€”overnight. So, what's your move?
