I believe free cash flow is one of the most important indicators of financial health, particularly for capital-intensive technology companies.
Accounting profits can be influenced by non-cash adjustments and one-off gains. Operating cash flow provides another perspective, while free cash flow accounts for capital expenditure.
Companies such as Microsoft and Alphabet illustrate why cash generation deserves attention as AI infrastructure spending accelerates.
However, an operating cash flow-to-net income ratio above 1 does not automatically indicate high-quality earnings. Working capital movements and accounting adjustments can distort comparisons.
Ultimately, I prioritise sustainable free cash flow, manageable debt, consistent margins and reasonable valuations. Strong earnings are encouraging, but converting profits into cash supports long-term financial resilience.
