Singapore Airlines Ltd. has signed a deal with global shipper DHL Express to provide crew and maintenance for five Boeing 777 freighters on routes to the U.S.via points in North Asia.
The move is part of DHL Express's bid to tap the growing demand in international express shipping markets.
The freighters will be delivered beginning in July and throughout 2023, and will be based at Singapore's Changi Airport, the companies said in a joint statement Thursday.
"Following the pandemic, we see good prospects for strong growth in trans-Pacific trade lanes," said Travis Cobb, a DHL Express executive vice president. The initial deal is set for more than four years and could be extended.
Singapore's flag carrier swung to a profit in the quarter ended December, its first since the coronavirus pandemic began, thanks partially to record cargo revenue. Its cargo segment was lifted by robust demand amid an industry capacity crunch, the company said last month.$SINGAPORE AIRLINES LTD(C6L.SI)$
