Thursday Afternoon Market Recap

• AMC Entertainment Shares of the movie theater chain dropped 4% after the company said it plans to issue a dividend to shareholders inthe form of preferred shareslisted on the NYSE under the ticker APE. The name is a nod to its retail investors who supported the company during the meme-stock mania.

• Virgin Galactic The space stock tumbled more than 7% in after-hours trading after the company’s quarterly report. Virgin Galactic posted a net loss of $111 million in the second quarter, compared to a $94 million net loss in the same period a year ago. The company also delayed its commercial service launch to the second quarter of 2023.

• Warner Bros. Discovery Shares of the media giant fell 9% after the combined company disclosed a total direct-to-consumer subscriber base of 92.1 million. It marked the first time the company reported quarterly earnings since WarnerMedia and Discovery merged earlier this year.

Today's Headlines

• At the 2022 Tesla shareholders meeting, CEO Elon Musk touched on a variety of topics, including macroeconomics and the possibility of share buybacks. He also said Tesla aims to produce 20 million vehicles annually by 2030, and thinks this will take approximately a dozen factories, with each factory producing 1.5 million to 2 million units per year. The Cybertruck is still slated for next year, but won’t have same specifications and pricing that were originally given when the company unveiled the experimental pickup in 2019, Musk said.

• Stock futures were flat in overnight trading Thursday as investors awaited for Friday’s jobs report for further clues about the Federal Reserve’s path of rate hikes and the state of the economy.Futures on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were little changed. S&P 500 futures and Nasdaq 100 futures were also flat.Economists expect 258,000 jobswere added in July, down from 372,000 in June, according to Dow Jones. Unemployment is expected to hold steady at 3.6%. The jobs report is released Friday at 8:30 a.m. ET.
