Gonna ask this question here as otherwise it'd look like trolling (I'm long INTC).

What do you guys think about the current trend of increasing power consumption and decreasing value?

My desktop is still sporting an old Ryzen 1700, bought for about $100 three or four years ago. Yesterday, I compared it to the behemoth 5995WX Threadripper.

Sure, these aren't "supposed" to be comparable, but still... The TR is 65x the price with 6.5x the performance. About 4x the power consumption. In other words, per watt it's significantly more expensive, though more efficient, and disregarding power efficiency, it's ridiculously more expensive from a strict pricing perspective.

Now, a more obvious comparison would be the 1700 to the 7700. Here, we're talking about 3x the price, with slightly higher power consumption (about 30%), about 50% higher single-core performance and 1x higher multi-core performance.

This isn't exactly what we're used to. I've been buying CPUs since the 90s, and this is definitely not in trend with history. I'm wondering what's gonna happen going forward. $Intel(INTC)$
