DIS and NFLX : The Power Of Big IP

DIS has 4 out of the top 10 biggest box office movies in 2022. NFLX and DIS basically own streaming, NFLX dominating on the series side and DIS on the movie side. DIS doesn't produce nearly the volume of series that NFLX does but every time they release a new Marvel or Star Wars series, it hits that Nielsens top ten list with admirable regularity. That's the power of big IP in action.

Streaming is just a rough business model because it supplanted cable, with its captive audience, and broadcast, with its ad glut, and replaced it with a system where customers can pay peanuts, hoover up the content they like, and bail for most of the year.

I've been doing it myself. I subscribed to Disney+ for a 6 month free trial and by the time it was over, I was out of stuff to watch. I'll return next fall maybe but probably for 1 month. DIS doesn't produce the volume of content to keep me around longer but that would be a forlorn hope anyway. Companies would go bankrupt trying to please customers like me and I'm certainly not the only one. $Walt Disney(DIS)$ $Netflix(NFLX)$
