Is Tesla Planning to Phase-Out Yoke Steering?

As Yoke Steering has become an option with an additional upgrade cost, the writing is potentially on the wall for what was once a standout feature of the current-generation Model S and Model X platform.

Yoke Steering is now available as a $250 option, with a more conventional round ‘Steering Wheel’ included as standard.

Nonetheless, Tesla does continue to highlight Yoke Steering as a feature of the Model S and Model X as “the ultimate focus on driving: no stalks, no shifting.”

The round Steering Wheel carries over the lack of turn stalks and shifters, retaining a similar spirit albeit in a more traditional form factor.

More telling yet, a $700 retrofit kit available in Tesla’s shop to transition Yoke Steering to the newer round design has been intermittently sold-out.

Could this be the end of the Yoke?

Real Talk

It was one conundrum to have the round Steering Wheel be made standard, then yet another to have Tesla offer a retrofit kit.

Adding an upgrade cost to Yoke Steering spells another conundrum where Tesla could be planning to reassess demand based on the limited supply for the Yoke that’s remaining.

It is apparent that Tesla is catering to a niche of buyers that still prefer the Yoke, which does have its benefits for performance-oriented driving.

Preferential treatment being given to the round Steering Wheel could be a sign that the take rate for the Yoke is dwindling, creating added complexity for the subset of buyers that are configuring their vehicles with Yoke Steering.
