The cheapest version of the Model Y SUV from Tesla Inc. now costs less than the average new vehicle price in the US, which Elon Musk achieved in a remarkable fashion. The base Model Y is priced at $46,990, which is $759 lower than the average cost of a car or truck in the US. The gap between these amounts has widened by more than $20,000 since mid-2022.
TESLA MODEL Y BASENo other carmaker has made such a significant cut to a high-volume vehicle in modern automobile history. The Model Y was the top-selling EV in the US last year and one of the most popular SUVs of any type.
Despite Musk denying that Tesla is starting a price war, his peers believe otherwise. Jim Farley, CEO of Ford Motor Co., whose Mustang Mach-E SUV lost a significant market share to the Model Y in the last quarter, even with some discounts, recently stated that price battles are erupting everywhere.
In fact, Tesla has been reducing prices outside the US as well. French automaker Renault SA described Tesla’s reductions as a challenge and is currently examining its pricing strategy in response. In China, automakers have followed Tesla’s lead in providing substantial discounts, with at least one analyst warning that some firms may not survive the ensuing price war.
