Tesla has introduced a steering wheel retrofit for the current-generation Model S and Model X, which originally came equipped with “Yoke Steering.”
The retrofit is available via Tesla’s shop, and is designed for Model S and Model X vehicles that were produced in 2021 through 2022.
Its goal is to retrofit the uniquely-functional “yoke” steering wheel introduced in the most recent Model S/X interior refresh with a more conventional round steering wheel.
While it adds a traditional round shape, the premium vegan leather nonetheless features heating as well as the standing omission of commonplace stalks and shifters.
This comes as Tesla has made the newly-designed round steering wheel standard on Model S and Model X, offered alongside the option of Yoke Steering.
Owners will need to schedule to have the $700 retrofit completed by Tesla Service beginning in March, if desired.
Real Talk
Making a traditional steering wheel standard is one step, while offering a complete retrofit is the most telling sign that the days of the yoke could be numbered.
Yoke Steering certainly had a love-it-or-hate-it consensus among Tesla’s customers, offering a uniquely-minimalistic aesthetic with surprising potential for sporty handling that could nonetheless make everyday and complex maneuvers more of a hassle.
Frankly we’re not sure how many customers would be truly disheartened to see the yoke go, potentially making it a limited collector’s item for vehicles that are still equipped with the previously-highlighted feature.
The new round steering wheel design retains the spirit of the yoke with its lack of traditional shifters/stalks, smart assistance, and capacitive buttons: customers may have been too accustomed to a round shape, and Tesla may have attempted to reinvent a wheel that didn’t need to be completely re-engineered from the ground up.
Will any customers be sad to see Yoke Steering go now that it’s looking increasingly likely that it will be replaced with an even more conventional design than anticipated?
