State Incentives for Buying & Owning a Tesla: A 41-State Breakdown

A majority of states, 41 in total, offer an incentive on the purchase and ownership of a new or used electric vehicle and/or solar incentives.

Alabama

Customers that use the utility company Alabama Power can receive a discounted rate on energy during off-peak hours.

Alaska

Similarly, CEA offers a $200 bill credit for up to 2 residential chargers, Alaska Electric Light and Power offers reduced rate EV charging during off-peak hours, and Alaska Power & Telephone Company offers customers with an EV that has a battery over 14kWh a $1,000 incentive.

Arizona

Customers can receive a Reduced Vehicle License Tax, carpool lane access, and up to a $1,000 state credit for Solar.

Additionally, SRP, AP, and Tucson Electric Power offer reduced electricity rates for electric vehicle owners.

Tesla offers a $500 discount on a new Powerwall with solar installation.

Arkansas

Entergy offers a $250 incentive on the installation of a level 2 charger.

California

California offers a Clean Vehicle Rebate Program, which currently offers a rebate of up to $2,000 on Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model Y for eligible customers and configurations.

A Clean Air Vehicle decal enables the use of HOV lanes, regardless of occupancy restrictions with the exception of pre-2018 Tesla’s and high-income customers.

The Clean Cars 4 All program provides between $5,500-$9,500 to replace an old internal-combustion engine vehicle with an electric vehicle for qualifying customers.

Energy companies offer numerous electric vehicle and solar incentives on a company-by-company basis, which can be among the most generous in the country.

Colorado

Colorado offers a $2,000 incentive for the purchase of an electric vehicle, or $1,500 for the lease of an electric vehicle. This increases to $2,800 for the purchase or $1,750 for the lease of a light-duty electric truck.

Connecticut

Connecticut has a $2,250 for electric vehicles with a purchase price that’s under $50,000.

There’s an additional $2,000 available for income-qualified individuals, as well as a reduced vehicle registration fee.

Delaware

Delaware has a program that offers $2,500 towards a new electric vehicle with a purchase price under $60,000.

Florida

Funding for home charging installation assistance is available.

Electric vehicles may use a carpool access lane with a HOV decal.

Georgia

Electric vehicles may apply for an AFV license plate, which allows for toll-free express lane access.

Georgia Power offers $250 towards home charging installation, and discounted electricity rates.

Hawaii

State exemption from vehicle inspection and maintenace programs.

There’s a solar state tax credit that’s equal to 40% of the installation cost, up to $5,000 per year.

Illinois

$4,000 post-sale rebate available for new and used electric vehicles.

Indiana

Indian Power & Light, Indiana & Michigan Power, and AES Indiana offer reduced charging rates and incentives.

Kansas

Evergy offers residential customers a $250 rebate for the purchase of a level 2 charger.

Louisiana

Entergy offers an incentive of $250 for a residential level 2 charger.

Maine

Maine has a $1,000 rebate on the purchase of a new electric vehicle under $50,000.

Maryland

There is a $700 rebate on wall connectors and installation, as well as solar incentives for the installation of a solar system including $170 per kW or $140 per Kw for Tesla’s Solar Roof with the trade of Solar Renewable energy Credits.

There is additionally a state tax credit equal to 30% of the installed cost, up to $5,000 per property.

Massachusetts

Massachusetts has a $3,500 rebate available for new electric vehicles with a purchase price of under $55,000.

Missouri

Evergy has a $500 rebate available for a level 2 charger.

Nebraska

Nebraska Public Power District and Southern Public Power District have a $500 rebate available on the installation of an eligible level 2 charger.

Nevada

Nevada offers reduced rates for electric vehicle charging, and NV Energy offers a $1,500 credit on the installation of a Powerwall as well as reduced electric vehicle charging rates.

New Hampshire

New Hampshire offers $100 per kW off the cash or loan of solar panels with the trade of Solar Renewable Energy Credits.

New Hampshire Electric Co-op also offers a $1,000 rebate for purchasing or leasing an electric vehicle, as well as $300 for the installation of a level 2 charger, and reduced charging rates for electric vehicles.

New Jersey

New Jersey offers some of the best incentives in the country:

  • $2,000-$4,000 rebate for electric vehicles up to $55,000.
  • A state sales tax exemption, applicable to new and used electric vehicles.
  • 10% discount on off-peak toll prices via EZ-Pass, for customers that apply for the discount.
  • HOV lane access between Interchange 11 and Interchange 14 on the New Jersey Turnpike.
  • $1,500 for the installation of level 2 charging equipments for houses with JCP&L residential electric service, or PSE&G service. Atlantic City Electric offers up to $1,000.
  • $770 per kW off the cash or loan of solar panels, or $650 off the cash or loan price of Solar Roof with the trade of Solar Renewable Energy Credits.

New York

A Drive Clean Rebate of between $500-$2,000, and a $5,000 state tax credit for solar.

Long Island HOV lane access with a Clean Pass sticker.

ConED offers reduced electric vehicle charging, and SmartCharge New York offers incentives for installing a charger.

NY-Sun offers customers $200 per kW for solar.

North Carolina

HOV lane access, and a $500 rebate for level 2 charger installation via Randolph Electric.

Oregon

A state rebate of $2,500 for the purchase or lease of an electric vehicle under $50,000.

A Charge Ahead rebate for a low-to-moderate-income household, providing $5,000 for the lease of a new or used electric vehicle under $50,000. This can be combined with the state rebate for a total of $7,500.

Many utility companies offer rebates for chargers.

The City of Forest Grove offers $500/kW up to $1,000 for solar, Salem Electric offers $300/kW up to $1,500, and Tesla is offering a $500 discount on a Powerwall with solar installation in Pacific Power territory.

Pennsylvania

Qualifying new and used electric vehicles are eligible for a rebate of between $2,000-$3,000, with a purchase price of under $50,000.

An additional $1,000 is available for low-income applicants.

There is an incentive of $90 per kW off the cash or loan price of solar panels, and $70 off the cash or loan price of Solar Roof with the trade of Solar Renewable Energy Credits.

Tesla offers a $500 discount in PPL Electric Utilities territory on the installation of a Powerwall with solar installation.

Rhode Island

There is a $2,500 rebate for new electric vehicles with a purhcase price under $60,000.

There is also an incentive of $100 per kW off the cash or loan price of solar panels or Solar Roof with the trade of Solar Renewable Energy Credits.

The Town of Warren provides an excise tax emption of up to $100 with the registration of an electric vehicles.

South Carolina

Duke Energy and Santee Cooper offer a $500 rebate for the installation of a level 2 charging station, and the former includes a monthly credit of $13.87 for electric vehicle owners that charge during off-peak time.

Tennessee

$400 rebate for the installation of a level 2 electric vehicle charger from the Knoxville Utility Board.

Texas

UCS offers a 50% rebate on the cost of a level 2 charger, up to $500.

Tesla has a $500 discount available in Bluebonnet Electric Coop territory on the purchase of a Powerwall with solar installation.

Various utility companies offer incentives on solar, including Garland Power & Light, Sunset Valley, and Gudalupe Valley Electric.

Utah

A $1,200 state tax credit on the installation of a solar system.

Salt Lake City offers free metered parking and free public charging to electric vehicle owners.

Tesla offers a $500 discount in Rocky Mountain Power territory on solar.

Vermont

There is a rebate of up to $4,000 available for new electric vehicles with a base MSRP of under $45,000, based on adjusted gross income.

There is also a $.02 per kWh production incentive available for ten years.

Green Mountain Power offers $2,200 towards the purchase of an electric vehicle under $75,000, as well as a free residential level 2 charger.

Tesla offers a $500 discount in Green Mountain Power territory on solar.

Virginia

Virginia Dominion Power and Appalachian Power off reduced electricity rates for off-peaking electric vehicle charging.

Washington
