How common would it be to find a company turning 100 years old ? Not common at all correct !
In the world of investment, rule of thumb is to invest in company with good track record.
Think need no look further than Disney - right !
What has started in1923 as a humble pioneer in American animation industry, has grown into an Entertainment conglomerate that encompasses :
- Media networks,
- Parks and Resorts,
- Studio entertainment,
- Consumer products
- Interactive media
Disney's Top 10 Blockbuster Movies : no introduction required !
- 1 Avengers: Endgame
- 2 Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens
- 3 Avengers : Infinity War
- 4 The Lion King (live)
- 5 The Avengers
- 6 Frozen 2
- 7 Avengers : Age of Ultron
- 8 Black Panther
- 9 Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi
- 10 Frozen (animated)
The Disney movie that I am looking forward to watch is The Little Mermaid (live action).
Slated for Worldwide release in May 2023.
What is so special about "The Little Mermaid" per se ?
- Based off well known prolific Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen
- The original well-loved children's fairy tale dated back to 1837 !
- The animated movie version debut in Nov 1989 was well-loved too.
- The blockbuster movie eventually grossed US$235 million worldwide
- The animated movie won two Oscars for Best Original Score & Best Original Song - "Under the Sea"
What am I looking forward to in the Live action movie ?
- The cast. How different & brilliant will the movie be; compared to animation.
- The racially different Ariel. Will she win viewers' hearts the world over ?
- The movie set. Will the mermaid's undersea world be as visually stunning as (a) Namor of Atlantis (Wakanda Forever) or (b) Aquaman of Atlantis ?
- The soundtrack. Composer Alan Menken will be the returning composer for the live action movie. Will previous tracks from the animated movie be recycled ? Or will it be a totally new score altogether ?
- The merchandise. Will the peripherals to the live action movie help to boost profits further; just like Frozen & Frozen II where merchandises sold helped to boost profits greatly.
- The re-run on Disney+ online streaming channel eventually.
What about Disney+, its streaming media services ?
Every year, myraids of online streaming media companies are jostling each other for a slice of the profit pie.
Is this pie big enough to keep every streaming media company profitable ?
Dun think so. You have only to look at Netflix recent stock price plunge to realize how tough it is to exponentially increase customers' base, Quarterly {not even talking about waiting for Yearly results}.
Top 12 Online Streaming Media Services (subscribers) :
- Netflix - 223.09 million.
- Amazon Prime Video - 200 million.
- Disney+ - 164.2 million.
- Tencent Video - 124 million.
- iQiYi - 101.4 million.
- HBO Max Discovery - 94.9 million.
- YouKu - 90 million.
- YouTube Premium - 80 million.
- Paramount+ - 67 million.
- Hulu - 47.2 million.
- Apple TV+ - 33.6 million.
What conclusion could be derived from above ranking ?
- Disney+ 3rd position is secured (for now) as Tencent video will need to increase 40 million subscriptions to equal Disney+.
- To equal 2nd position online streamer, Disney+ will need to add 35.8 million new subscriptions. Will definitely take a bit of time on DIS's part as well.
- There's still room at the top for Disney+ to aspire and work towards. Sufficiently motivated yet Dis+ ?
Admittedly this remains a challenge for Disney to remain profitable quarterly and consistently.
