$Berkshire Hathaway(BRK.B)$  bought more than USD 4B of $Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing(TSM)$  shares in the third quarter. The purchase of 60 million shares of Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM), the leading contract producer of semiconductors in the world, was the highlight of the latest 13-F report. Those shares are worth USD 4.4 billion based on TSM latest closing price.

The shares of Taiwan's top company and a critical producer of semiconductors are trading for half their peak of $145 hit in January. There undoubtedly will be speculation about whether the purchase is by CEO Warren Buffett, who oversees Berkshire's $306 billion equity portfolio, or one of his investment lieutenants, Todd Combs and Ted Weschler. Buffett tends to be less comfortable with technology stocks than Combs and Weschler.

Berkshire's big holdings in $Apple(AAPL)$  and $Bank of America(BAC)$  didn't change in the period. Berkshire owns about 895 million shares of Apple worth $132 billion, its largest equity holding by far and about 40% of the entire stock portfolio. Berkshire holds about one billion shares of Bank of America worth $38 billion.
